Lets put this into context I am blogging in the make money online niche and I will say that because I am not fully up and running yet. Specifically the how to earn online by blogging sub-niche, I have a domain name which one could relate to the make money online niche but my domain name doesn't hint at all that my website promoting blogging specifically (If you didn't get what I just said I am having a panic attack)

I am saying all this because most domain names I see on page 1 have the word blogging in it or of that sort (in general domain name is more specific to what the website actually markets) and I want to hear from BHW fam if domain name is super important.

It is important - it should be specific as you want these people to go to it because they are really interested in the content. If they think they will find something else behind the domain, they will close it right away if they find out its actually not what they thought.

In my opinion, for the longterm projects, it's quite important. And if people will be coming back to visit.

Domain name also plays a big part in getting links. Nobody will link to a bad domain name. A name that looks reputable will get links easily.

It is very important. Your domain name is more than just an arbitrary URL to which you send consumers. It’s the backbone of digital marketing and plays a critical role in building your brand. If you see a link from an unfamiliar domain, you may be wary of clicking on it. This can hurt your click-through-rates on PPC campaigns or social media marketing initiatives. However, if you use relevant terms in your domain or have a recognizable brand, users will visit your website with less hesitation. ;)

Your domain is your BRAND name. It does not necessarily have to have a keyword that relates to your product or service.

But it should look good on a T-Shirt and your other merchandise and should be easy to remember.

It represents YOU, so your marketing will be attempting to "anchor" people to it.

Products change with time, but the BRAND remains.

Humans have a 90 day attention span, which is why companies continue to market and promote their brand. The hypnotic "anchor" must be continually renewed.

    Best regards,

    The Eye

Not very important IMO. Long as it's somewhat relatable, you're good to go. Don't waste too much time on that. You can also change the domain name to something later, just work on building the content and business first.

If you're trying to build a household name or something really legit, then yeah maybe something catchy would help but not too important anymore.

I think it depends on the purpose of the website. It can be useful to have a short, easy-to-memorize name for an e-commerce project, while some specific parts of domain name (e.g. wiki-, -warez etc.) gonna make sence in some other instances. I'm not sure about the SEO side of things though

To answer your question correctly. "How important is the domain name?"

    1. Domain Keyword: Is important If you are setting up a landing page that will generate targetted traffic according to your niche. (So you only focus on that particular keyword to get it to the first page of Google and that's where the domain keyword plays the major role in ranking).
    2. Domain name is not important: If you are going after a bunch of blog topics or specific niche blog topics. You do not have to worry about the domain name. If your domain name is a keyword domain name and you trying to write irrelevant content on it. Chances are you are going to have a hard time ranking it.

Your domain name (putting metrics aside) is not the most important part of your website, but it can be used to help or harm your efforts.

Having a spammy or off-topic domain may confuse or concern your potential audience.

Think about what potential readers might think when they see your URLs. Will they want to click through to your site?

Most people will be clicking on a page link, not the hompage, so your URLs will be relevant to their intent, even if the keywords are not in the domain.

    Example: supermoneysite.com/how-to-make-money-blogging

having the URL supermoneyblogger.com/how-to-make-money-blogging won't make much of a difference (it's actually a bit long!).

The actual domain name does not need to have the word "blogging" in it just because your competitors' sites do. In fact, it might help make you stand out more if you DON'T use it.

I'm going to agree with @seocrab and the other posters in this thread.
#1 Yes domain name is important - keep it clean not spammy looking.
#2 I'm going to say this and it may piss some people off here, that doesn't make it any less true: You have to have a plan in place for the angle you are going to use --

    I.E.
Example 1:you can use a domain that explains what the site is about say bloggermoney.com - if you are basing your traffic on organic keyword searches meaning: someone hits google search : how to make money online (which is highly competitive and you may never rank for that enough to get you on page 1) also when you go to place ads (if you are going to use ads) it will cost quite a bit more than something less competitive. SEO is going to be the critical factor in getting these things ranked as the keyword search volume is mega huge which means its more valuable per click - meaning everyone is trying tor rank for them.

Example 2: You can use a catchy mashup of terms like say BlogCash.com (not the best example but you get the idea) again for organic search traffic. Combines highly searched (high value) keywords and that could also help rank. Again these keywords are highly competitive, yada yada yada.

Example 3: Use something unique, easy to pronounce and really really short. These domains are considered premium by registriars and will cost you more than your average run of the mill .com These domains are used to create a brand like @theeyeinside stated above and then the angle and way you are going to approach traffic is a lot different than the other methods I already mentioned. That said though there are places to find those domains (premium) at a discount.

Example 4: Using a generic domain name with a fair amount of search volume keywords say laptopearning.com (again just shooting from the hip here). Organic search volume is much lower and the target is actually broader. This requires a bit of a different approach. Notice none of the domain names i suggested have blogger or blog or blogging anywhere in them. With this approach you could conceivably set up pages like this laptopearning-blog then under that page every post would look something like this laptopearning-blog-learn-to-blog OR you could set up specific pages for specific content like laptopearning-learn-to-blog laptopearning-affiliate-marketing laptopearning-mlm etc. or locality specific like this laptopearning-how-to-blog-usa laptopearning-how-to-blog-croatia again not the best, however, you get the idea.

There are other ways to set these up, other ways to monetize and other strategies to rank them. There really is no right or wrong when it comes to how you want to approach your domain name choice - other than the obvious no spammy titles and if you are buying expired domains to check them out thoroughly and make sure they are clean. The other thing is to make sure that the approach you are going to take to rank and create traffic to your site fits your choice. Each method is going to take a varying amount of work to get organic rankings, at some point though the organic ranking is going to outweigh the cost of advertising your site if done properly.

All of this means nothing if you load up your site with shit content, unrelated links and ads, etc.

Lastly, if you can get your site ranking - even- if you don't like it anymore, you can sell it. then use that money to try it again at a different angle.

    Best of Luck ;)

I think its relate to your niche of the blog because it gives the idea what kind of content on your site.

For example, if your niche is Tech but domain name is like brand name or irrelevant, people may not show interest or trust your site.
