I'm pretty good when it comes to buying media
This is a simple technique I use to know if an advertisement spot is profitable

I analyze a competitor ad position and see how
long they are in a given spot. If they're there for a long time
    it means its profitable.

-I would make a similar banner ad (or text ad)
-With a similar landing page for similar optimization results

If you have similar graphics you can get same conversions

SpyFu was good for PPC ads

What Runs Where is good for tracking how long competitors are
buying ads on a specific page (it's like a web archive for ads)

So I can easily blow $3k-$5k with a click of a button

How you do competitor analysis while buying PPC ads? They don't disclose their customers, do they?

I believe there is a service or a tool called
    What Runs Where
that shows you WHAT ads are RUNNING and WHERE they are running, It would probably show how long they have been running also.

I always capture opt in - and do exit opt in too
so I can mail them a 7 day follow up and sell them on why
they should sign up if they haven't

I use squeeze page with good headlines

I haven't done re-targeting yet at all! Do you find success with that?

    New technologies developing these days

Split test, optimize, rinse and repeat.
