Hey everyone,

With all the AI search updates over the past year, I wanted to start a discussion on how people are approaching backlink building now.

A few questions for the community:
  • Are you still relying on guest posts as a core strategy, or shifting toward other methods (digital PR, HARO/journalist outreach, broken link building, etc.)?
  • Has relevance become more important than raw DA/DR when picking sites?
  • Any red flags you now watch out for when choosing guest post opportunities that you didn't worry about before?
Personally, I've noticed that smaller, relevant sites with real traffic tend to hold up better than high-metric but low-activity blogs. Curious to hear what's working (and what's not) for others here.

Would love to hear different perspectives — especially from anyone who's tested this post-recent algorithm changes.

Focus more on relevance and real traffic than high DA or DR. Guest posts still work, but digital PR, journalist outreach, and natural mentions are becoming more valuable.

the same holds true for me instead of DR value sites, all that I would love to have is some niche-related backlink from user-generated sites.

same here tbh. Instead of chosing a website with a high DR value but which only exist to provide link-building opportunities, I would choose a relevant website with real trafic.

I have started paying more attention to relevance and actual traffic instead of focusing only on DA or DR

A strong topical match usually makes more sense than a high-metric site with little real activity

Guest posts still work but I think relevance and real traffic are more important than just DA DR. I also look at the site’s content quality, traffic and niche before getting a backlink. I avoid sites with spammy content too many outbound links or no real activity.

me too to be honest, my interest in DR has greatly diminished. a website that has actual visitors nd engagement is always a safer choice than one with high metrics.

Yes guest posts are a valuable way to build links. Relevance and high authority are a must if you plan to get backlinks from a website.

I've had way more luck reaching out to smaller blogs in my niche instead of chasing big name sites with crazy DR. Sometimes it's just a simple DM or sharing something useful with them, and if you vibe, you get a real, steady link that actually brings in people. Tools like SparkToro or just nosing around Twitter have helped me dig up these hidden gems with real folks reading their stuff.

I care less about DR now and more about whether the site has real traffic, topical relevance, and pages that actually rank. A contextual link from a smaller active site often looks stronger than a guest post on a dead high-DR domain.

Everyone here is spot on about prioritizing real traffic and strict relevance over vanity metrics like DA/DR. But the real bottleneck in 2026 is finding those sites at scale, since standard SEO tool databases are flooded with repurposed link farms.

To bypass this, I’ve shifted away from traditional SEO footprint prospecting. Instead, I am utilizing specialized scraping platforms to collect profile directories and contact databases directly. By configuring strict data filtering parameters via API testing tools, you can segment business registries based on highly specific geographic or niche indicators.

This allows for highly targeted commercial outreach to legitimate, active businesses that have real audiences, rather than hitting the same burned-out "write for us" lists everyone else is using. If you execute an empirical data tracking campaign comparing the SERP movement from these real corporate sites versus standard "high DR" SEO blogs, the difference in algorithmic trust is undeniable.

For me guest posts still work but I'm more selective now, I focus on relevance, real traffic & content quality rather than da/dr alone, a relevant, active site is usually the better link

same for me, these days I am not that worried about DR. a relevant site with real people visiting it and having content is always going to look more credible than a site with lot of metrics but no content.

Digital PR can be useful if you have something new or useful to share. One good mention from a relevant site can be more valuable than many random guest posts.

I've been wondering about this too it feels like relevance matters more than chasing high DR alone I'd rather look at sites with real traffic and content that actually fits the niche curious to hear what others have changed recently

Ive definitely started prioritizing relevance and actual traffic over DADR A backlink from a smaller site in the right niche can be much more valuable than a high metric site with no real audience

Before buying a guest post, check the site's recent posts and traffic. If everything looks made only for SEO, I suggest to skip it.
