How effective is pepper spray?

Haha, I don't actually live in the war-zone that is Memphis, but yeah escalating a situation with a gun can backfire pretty fast. Besides, I really don't care to shoot any of these people, I would rather just take my chances and fight them. These aren't murderers I am talking about, just morons. I couldn't really care less about the "heckling", it's just that I feel like it could possibly go further than that. It isn't so much about not being able to defend myself, it is more about stopping it before it comes to that. These are always groups, and when you get in close quarters with a group anything can happen no matter how much of a "badass" I could hope to be. I just want something to get me out of a situation before it goes further. Something like pepper spray is going to have an element of surprise and cause instant confusion that allows me to get away. If it goes wrong, I would do what I had to do. Fighting a bunch of drunk losers or stupid kids isn't really a point of pride to me, nor do I feel like I have anything to prove or gain from it.

One of my insturctor in the army was a cop, and part of his training was to get pepper sprayed, use his night stick to defend himself and then call for radio backup.

He said to me somebody who is pepper sprayed definetely can fight. It just "takes a whole bunch of willpower to keep your eyes open".

I don't like to hang around drunks though, I wouldn't bike through this area again if it happens often.:blackeye:

Carry around a gigantic fake gun on a holster in plain view.

If anyone thinks this is a good idea, you better have a real gun to back it up LOL Besides that is just asking for trouble. Around here I would probably get shot by a cop for that anyway. "On the ground!", "It's not..", BOOM HEADSHOT, high fives all around.

Just be careful mate, like previously mentioned it is no good spraying someone, and then all his mates getting involved and you run out of spray etc.

I recommend really mixing up your route. Even if you did spray someone, what happens next time when you see them again- they are going to be very pissed off at you.

If all else fails, maybe buy some batman-like smoke grenades to drop when in trouble, so you can cycle off in a cloud of smoke!

really guys...
...telling him to carry a gun is just way to far out. meatro pointed out very well where that will lead you.

@OP:
...you just nailed it - it`s just about having the chance to get away if necessary. and your approach is the best solution by far. even if a cop states that you can fight after being mazed - show me one that is really capeable of doing so. experience it yourself and then tell me you just needed some "willpower" to get your eyes open...
...no need to take fighting lessons etc. i mean - you just wanna ride your bike.

i had situations myself where i`d likeed to whoop someones ass - and it sucks to let suckers like that just walk away with their behavior...
...but all in all they are just morons. they will even get used to you and your "silly" biking ;)

don`t give em no attention...let em laugh...or whatever.
...get some maze just in case you really need it someday. everything else would just cause more stress than it is worth it.

have a good ride buddy...

Ok, here's the deal. I have taken up cycling as exercise and a hobby (I guess you could call it that, since I enjoy it so much). Over the past two and a half weeks I have built up to doing 10km (~6.3mi) a night with no stops on hilly roads and the results in my legs and over-all health have been great! Awesome, right??

Well, it is, but the issue I am having is people heckling me. I am 6'3" ~180lbs riding a mountain bike modded for road riding, so it isn't because I am like a huge guy on a tiny bike or anything. It seems to be based solely on the fact that I am an adult riding a bike.

I have just ignored them all and kept on going, honestly I could care less what these morons think of me. Also it seems to happen with groups of young guys (who have probably been drinking) and sometimes groups of adults (who have obviously been drinking) that happen to see me riding past wherever they are. I heard one woman tell someone to chase me down for no reason at all. I honestly do not understand it, but it has caused some me some concern because it has happened about 4 times already in different situations with different people.

I am pretty sure that eventually it will happen that I will get jumped. I don't know if me ignoring them is enraging them more or what. If it happened at the beginning of my ride I could surely out accelerate their moronic asses, BUT if it were to happen at the end of a ride or they catch me by surprise who knows.

I never expected this, I thought it would just be fun exercise. Apparently these fat drunk morons are offended by that. I live in the US, I guess it has come to the point where exercising offends people. I am from the US, so I am not being a racist or a whatever you would call it, these morons are my fricken countrymen :(

Anyway, tl;dr, would pepper spray be sufficient to stop 2 to 4 people in the space I would have, say 20 yards of space for them to close to get to me, and allow a getaway? I know some people are going to say to nut up and fight or take self defense courses or some BS, but honestly I do not want to engage these people unless I am just completely backed into a corner. I just want something to deter them if it did come down to it. I see no gain in engagement on my part.

Thanks for any suggestions! :)

It works for sure, but one BIG suggestion, don't save money on extra to try it out and get new can as used tend to leak out. You MUST know how it works, how it looks when sprayed out and how it feels when you get it by yourself (spraying your face would be stupid idea, but little bit smell your hands after try out give you idea how it feels).

Generally there are two types of them - jet and pulverized, in your case I take jet as it can throw this crap at longer range and are less affected by wind then pulverized, but you must hit with jet your target.

Also, aim for pepper filled, but not CS, CS work less on drunks and junkies. If it is possible get gel sprayer, I think mace make some kind of "pistol" with changeable canisters, but if there are chance that anyone can misidentify it as gun I better stay away.

Always aim for chest, not face, chest is larger target and after milliseconds sucker feel all power of chemicals which continue work all his way to water source.

Anyway, again - try out and know how to use before you relay on something! This is golden rule #1.

Fighting lessons is more for fitness than to be a badass. There's not much out there that requires as much cardio, skill and awareness as grappling does.

That's why it's such a fast growing sport, because it's not just some barroom heros in there slugging it out anymore (although those are still around and they're still fun to watch.) It's very technical, physical and like I said.. Will drain you of all your energy/cardio faster than almost anything.

It's also practical because it's effective. You don't have to walk around with your chest puffed up for it to be effective and you also may be surprised how many trained fighters will actually walk away from you acting stupid faster than they will put you out.

But like I said... When your pepper spray runs out (or like somebody said above.. when you come riding by again tomorrow) you better have a backup plan that's a little better than run... That just means you don't ride your bike anymore.

I liked the smoke bomb idea personally. :P

Honestly, if it was one person approaching you, I would say fight. However, if they're a bunch of punks (like most people are these days) and try to gang up on you, pepper spray the shit out of them. Go to Cabela's website and get pepper spray for bears.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions :)
