Ok, here's the deal. I have taken up cycling as exercise and a hobby (I guess you could call it that, since I enjoy it so much). Over the past two and a half weeks I have built up to doing 10km (~6.3mi) a night with no stops on hilly roads and the results in my legs and over-all health have been great! Awesome, right??

Well, it is, but the issue I am having is people heckling me. I am 6'3" ~180lbs riding a mountain bike modded for road riding, so it isn't because I am like a huge guy on a tiny bike or anything. It seems to be based solely on the fact that I am an adult riding a bike.

I have just ignored them all and kept on going, honestly I could care less what these morons think of me. Also it seems to happen with groups of young guys (who have probably been drinking) and sometimes groups of adults (who have obviously been drinking) that happen to see me riding past wherever they are. I heard one woman tell someone to chase me down for no reason at all. I honestly do not understand it, but it has caused some me some concern because it has happened about 4 times already in different situations with different people.

I am pretty sure that eventually it will happen that I will get jumped. I don't know if me ignoring them is enraging them more or what. If it happened at the beginning of my ride I could surely out accelerate their moronic asses, BUT if it were to happen at the end of a ride or they catch me by surprise who knows.

I never expected this, I thought it would just be fun exercise. Apparently these fat drunk morons are offended by that. I live in the US, I guess it has come to the point where exercising offends people. I am from the US, so I am not being a racist or a whatever you would call it, these morons are my fricken countrymen :(

Anyway, tl;dr, would pepper spray be sufficient to stop 2 to 4 people in the space I would have, say 20 yards of space for them to close to get to me, and allow a getaway? I know some people are going to say to nut up and fight or take self defense courses or some BS, but honestly I do not want to engage these people unless I am just completely backed into a corner. I just want something to deter them if it did come down to it. I see no gain in engagement on my part.

    Thanks for any suggestions! :)

The effectiveness of pepper spray depends on the person who is being sprayed's diet. I carry pepper spray. I was wondering the same thing one day, so I sprayed my finger with the smallest drop imaginable and placed it on the tip of my tongue. The entire front of my mouth was an inferno of pain for at least 15 minutes. I know without a doubt that if I were sprayed in the eyes, I would be completely debilitated for quite a while with it.

I'm not sure where all this occurs, but our police in our town when being trained get sprayed in the face to have its effectiveness proven so the cops will have more confidence in it. My friend (cop) confirmed my suspicions. Frm the time you're sprayed until the time it completely worn off, you're going to hate your life. You can't breathe, you can't see shit, you cry profusely unwillingly.

The only reason pepper spray wouldn't work on someone (if you get a direct shot in the eyes) is if they frequently eat a shitton of extremely hot food on a frequent basis.

    Hope this helps.

Pepper spray works well if they get too close to you, like within 10 feet. I bike too and have pepper spray in case of a dog. (I use this one.) I've never had hecklers but I go early in the morning instead of at night.

That's what I wanted to hear :) I'm going to pick some up today. It is highly unlikely that anyone in my locale would be eating enough hot food to make them immune, and even if there were some that eat like that, the chances would be slimmer yet that it would be people I had a run-in with.

Yeah she's right! I had to get sprayed as i'm in the military. Everything burned and i drooled all over myself for about 4 hours and you would think water helps but it just reactivates it. I would definitely use it if i were in your shoes as i think 99% of the time it will provide sufficient getaway time. Any freak of nature that keeps coming after being sprayed is exactly that, a freak of nature. What city you live in if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the suggest on that spray. I do think that a large part of my problem is going late at night instead of during daylight hours. But that is just when I like to go :/

    it is effective...
...you just have to choose whether it should really "spray" like in a wide angle, which is ideal if your target is pretty close to you - or to choose one which would more of fire up a solid stream. which needs more accurate tagreting but is good if there is still distance between you and them.

go to a shop and talk about the maybe needed purpose and your worries with the guy(s) there...
    ...they will show you.

it is btw. the better solution than fronting those people...
...i have been biking since i learned how to ride a bike and still do. i am in my mid 30`s and it is incredible how often you can get into trouble with people.

...keep up cycling - it`s a great thing. for your body and for your head. i enjoy it just like some sort of meditation. don`t be encouraged by some morons and fell ok to care about your safety.

    cheers.

Haha, I've seen those on TV before, I could be a one-man crowd control solution.

I've not been pepper sprayed but i have been CS gassed and I'm guessing the experience is similar lol. Pretty much couldnt see properly and was dribbling and snotting all over the place ... lovely!

I'm sure it would be a good defence for if people got up in your face, I'm just struggling to understand why people would hassle you just for exercising? They must be complete planks!

Me too! If someone else posted what I posted and I were the outsider reading it I would probably think in the back of my head that the guy MUST be being some kind of ass, or that they looked really funny or something to draw that attention. I'm just a standard issue man minding my own business and concentrating on my pace. Nondescript in every way. I just happen to get in their line of sight.

Keep in mind - If you want to buy one, try to look for military spray, not those commercial ones that are selling on gas stations. Amount of pepper base in commercial sprays is much, much lower than in army spray and spray made for security units.

Thanks for the encouragement :) Yeah, the only thing to gain from actually getting into it with them, in my opinion, is getting injured and not being able to ride/exercise. If it were just one person or group, I might have a point to prove to them to stop it. But this is just totally random people. Crazy.

When I as a teenager there was a house up the street that was rented by a bunch of young adults (early 20's). We used to hang out there because the always had beer and pot, and it was just right up the street.

One day when I was there, several of them came in and one of them was completely incapacitated.. They were all washing his face & looking concerned and for some reason didn't want to talk too much about what had happened, and he was screwed-up for over an hour.

Turns out, the guy was drunk and started messing with some ladies at a local hockey game. Not sure what he did or said, but at some point, some lady pulled out her mace and took him OUT. And I mean "out" too, as in completely unable to do anything other than moan and yell.

So, that's my first-hand account of what a person looks like over an hour after they've been maced. It had to have been a life-changing experience, sort of how like what happens when some dumbass gets shot for being stupid. I've met a guy that that happened to also. SO, in addition to this being a report on the effectiveness of mace, It's also an endorsement of the practice as it may serve as necessary event in someone's personal development. Some people are only capable of learning by punishment. Maybe you could deduct the expense of the mace as an "educational material".

I actually was pulled off a bike while riding past a group of drunks on a sidewalk late on a Friday night. Some large, drunken douchebag just reached out as I went past, hooked his arm across my abdomen and yanked me off the bike. Everyone else in the group started yelling at him, it wasn't necessarily malevolent on his part, more like a drunken impulse, but it happened, and something like that could happen to you. So I'd take the hint from the previous posts, and ride when there's less chance of people being around.

Another thing to consider is carrying a firearm on the bike, like maybe having a holster under the seat. At one point I had a very small and concealable .22 Beretta that was smaller than the palm of my hand. It had a 7-round magazine and I had hollow-points. You never know. You might run into some paranoid pot-head with a chip on his shoulder and some manufactured social-outrage like Treyvon, that decides that you are following him, and that deserves a beat-down. Like the man said, if you plant corn, you get corn. Riding your bike past masses of people means statistically it's just a matter of time before you have a situation. Best to be ready for it.

First, you are from Memphis. I'm guessing that carrying a gun is most likely not a spectacular idea. There's a suggestion for a .22cal; but I am in Missouri (from California) and the last thing you want to do with these fucking rednecks is get into a pissing match with guns.

They sell assault rifles here. For fun. They carry them around in their cars... Pull a .22 on somebody and it will be a big mistake. (Because here, I can shoot you in the face, drag you onto my property and say you came at me with a gun. I'll get a medal.)

I can tell you that pepper spray is pretty effective. I bought one of those cheap little canisters from the checkout line of some dumb store.. I never got to use it, so one day I decided to see what it was all about.. I had it in my room, and after a ton of pot, figured it'd be fairly safe to just spray it onto a dinner plate.

Long story short, the ceiling fan was on and everybody in the house hated me for about 2 days. Just a little spritz on a plate and my eyes burned, I was washing my hands for about 20 minutes. It was ridiculous.

A better alternative... Make your bike riding part of an all around fitness routine. You are obviously not confident in your abilities to defend yourself (no offense) so go take up boxing or Muay Thai (something that focuses primarily on knocking your opponent the fuck out, not just a manlier form of stretching).

Then, they can heckle you.. Let them, fat rednecks, who gives a shit? But if they want to actually confront you.. Then send their fucking teeth down the back of their throat.

You'll be surprised how fast the biggest, baddest shit talker you ever met will run squealing home when you dislodge a front tooth or two.

Either that.. Or ride down the road the other way. Iunno.

Just bring enough pepper spray for everybody. You pepper spray my friends and your canister runs out.. I'm gonna feed that fucking canister to you. Not that I would heckle you for riding a bike down the road, good for you. This internet shit kills your cardio and fitness and it's important to keep up with that stuff in life. Bikes are one of the best low-impact methods for that.

Stupid rednecks. God I hate rednecks.
