How does the competitor get ranked 1?

Hello guys.

Im doing seo for a friends website and he is gonna pay me when the site gets to rank 1.

I have been using seo spyglass to look for links that the top 2 competitors have.
Here are the stats

My friends website:
3: pr6 links
7: pr 3 links
8: pr 2 links
16: pr 1 links

Rank 1 competitor
1: pr5 link
3: pr 3 links

rank 2 competitor
1: pr 6 links
13: pr 3 links
2: pr 2 links
1: pr 1 link


I got my friends website to around 3rd page of google. But i do not know how the competitors website are ranked higher if I put more links with high pr for my friends site.

Well, if it was as simple as computing how many PR links you have versus the competition, everything would be a lot easier. But so many factors come into play in ranking certain sites for certain keywords. Domains age/trust/neighborhood, on page optimization, quality and relevancy of the incoming links. A High PR link is not always the high quality and highly relevant link for instance.

Just try to get links from relevant pages instead of concentrating on PR. Do article marketing, and web 2.0 submission, build some profile links and try to mix in some edu links.
 
If you are friends website is new you should probably give some time coz Domain Age also does matters in SEO. Just keep building links and you will get there.

Also you should have promised on top 3 rather than No. 1 position coz you can never be certain of anything when it comes to SEO - just my opinion.
 
Write three articles, spin articles using spinning software, and submit those articles to article directores (personally, I order this from a freelancer for 1000+ submits).

Usually you'll get ~300 live links from autoapprove sites right off the bat, and you can either wait for the other backlinks to be crawled or ping them in sets (I'll do ping sets of 100 links each day). Don't know if this is as effective as it used to be after the Panda update.

But, I'm still a noob crawling around BHW just reading.

Maybe the competitor just has a better website with content that Google thinks is more beneficial to the users. Also, if they have a good bounce rate and have been loyally serving visitors for much longer than your friend, of course Google will consider them a stronger authority site than your friend.

It isn't all about backlinks. Do you have any experience with Onsite seo?

But for my friends, I just wondered why his competitors backlinks were not higher then my friends and how they are on top of the competition
 
I noticed that time maybe the most important factor of SEO!

I have a website running for about 5 years, I didn't do any backlink building, but now it is on the first position on google!

You don't need backlinks to have a decent ranked site. You also don't see the "trickle down" of authority that all the backlinks may have. You would have to study like 10 tiers of backlinks upon backlinks to really get to the root of the authority that a certain link has.

You would also have to look at:
Are the links all on related content pages?
Are the links all d0follow?
Are the links "contextual" or blog comments?
Is the PR on the actual PAGE or the ROOT DOMAIN?
 
Google loves aged domains, shows that the site is more likely to be authentic and not some short term spammers who want to make a quick buck.

When's the last time you saw a spammers site that has been around for years? Rarely, because they are usually reported.

Yep, there is just so much more to Googles ranking process than just backlink building. Link Building is a great way to shoot up in the rankings, but factors such as bounce rate, new content rate, pages viewed per visitor, on-site use of keywords, outbound links on pages, number of pages indexed, age of domain all play a role.

Domain Name
Domain Age
Content
Outbound Links of your backlinks
Anchor text
Diversity
Link velocity

...
