How does Google break a link network

I have been hit by a Google unnatural link warning on Webmaster Tools yesterday. My most recent SEO work done are SAPE links and another diversified link building service.

Interestingly, Google did not threaten to deindex my site but just said that the link juice from those detected unnatural links will be discounted.

Now I am wondering where to start cleaning up from - because I do not know where the source of the unnatural links are. The latest link service I only signed up few days ago, so can't be it.

One possibility is SAPE especially due to the recent rumours about G cleaning up SAPE, but I've got other websites on SAPE and they aren't affected.

The other possibility is, other link building services I used - but I used them long ago and shouldn't I have gotten unnatural link warnings long ago?

This episode led me to think about how Google breaks link networks.

Based on my rudimentary knowledge of algorithms... in order for Google to detect sites on a link network, there must be something in common amongst all the sites to link them together - a unique signature or pattern which identifies the site as a member of the link network. Some factors could be: common IP addresses, domain whois info, common site content, poorly spun content, anchor text diversity, etc.

Which leads to the question - if Google wants to target SAPE - what would be SAPE's unique identifiers? Google surely doesn't want to roll out an update to target SAPE which would hit lots of other sites with false positives - that would make them look stupid.

Based on my basic knowledge of SAPE, sites offering SAPE links are often not owned by the same people/organisations - they are mostly individual bonafide websites/blogs which are featuring SAPE links to earn some money. There is no single common way to feature SAPE links - some are in footer, some in sidebar, some inline with content, etc. Lots of other websites not participating in paid backlinks feature outbound hyperlinks in the same format as well, so how would Google specifically target SAPE?

If it's something as simple as detecting footer links, small fonts, invisible links, etc... I guess it wouldn't be part of Google's efforts at breaking a specific link network but it's just general anti-webspam algorithms which probably already exist for a long time.

Food for thought and discussion...

There are many ways to identify unnatural links whether they are part of SAPE is not so important for Google.

Google will look for a combination of signals... and Google's biggest advantage is that they don't really need to give any excuses and explanations to their actions.

Let's get back to the signals combination, Google identifies few newbies that have links from .ru sites to their US based sites, all these links have the same anchor text etc'

Next Google sees more links on these sites which are in Russian to some other not related sites and the links are in English so they now look for more suspicious backlinks that point to them as well and keeps on and on.

The above is just example how unnatural links can be spotted... if it can be defined, it can be programmed. Google will continue to spot them until they reach a critical mass that will lead to certain networks to collapse and create the bazz for Google.

It's fairly simple. They make fake sites, put keywords on the link network. Spend a few thousand getting their links up. privately index the pages and take them down. Rinse and repeat.

Sape didn't have it's problem until BHW started talking about it openly. Clearly google watches this place closely.

I can't agree more with you.

A lot of people say that destroying SAPE will be hard and google won't be able to do it. People that say this are people that are selling SAPE links or people that are idiots.
Anyone that does SEO knows how easy it is to get the blogs in a private network even if new sites keeps getting added.

If we are going to do it manually, it will be like this.
Create a fake site and call it siteA.
Get links from the network.
SiteA will have 10 links pointing to it from the SAPE network. So 10 blogs or 10 domains pointing to siteA.
So you have 10 blogs that you know are from SAPE.
Those 10 blogs will obviously have other links pointing to other customers. Let us say one blog points to siteB.
I'll look at siteB and look at the backlinks, filter out forum profiles, and other common links. I'll organize the links based on link juice power.
I am going to find 10-20 more SAPE links pointing to it. If one person does this manually, he will find around 1,000 links a day easily.

Google can afford 1000+ workers looking for a link network. Google is a $250 billion dollar company with lots of software and tools. They have man power plus resources. They have valedictorians, smart and talented people around the globe. Destroying a blog network is very easy for them. The thing is, all google needs is to do to destroy a blog network is get 30% of the blogs that are inside it. That is it.

I second that, the big G does not necessarily need to use algorithms, they take manual actions.

.

I agree.....

The smart ones will love sape being taken down. Good opportunities if you can figure out what I mean. ;)

SAPE started in 2005 and they survived each update so there has to be some reason right. It will be difficult for google to take down SAPE as a whole. The primary reason being the network is crowdsourced although there are great amount of hacked sites as well. So google can not target whole platform but individual sites might be done.

The only way i see google taking down the network is by buying links across whole SAPE network and weed out all the sites part of network.Which is very much possible as they are targeting individual network in each update so there has to be some manual intervention involved rather then algorithmic.

As SAPE is a subscription based service so google may also be scanning for link changes on monthly basis and find out the sites that are part of link network. But it might be not as accurate.

Or third possible way is they will devalue home page links like they always have(blog comments/article marketing etc). (If you can not solve the problem; remove the problem seems to be there new strategy)

Don't use SAPE links only for backlinks make sure they account no more then 20% of your link profile. If only SAPE links are used google can easily identify backlinks as part of a high pr network penalise the site.

I highly doubt that Google is lurking here for the latest information on backlink stuff like SAPE, don't think Google really needs BHW to figure that shit out...

Lol Google is reading BHW to learn how to adjust their algo.... They gave the best SE engineers in the world, but noooo they come to BHW to learn about the latest in SEO...

Sorry mate, that was just to funny to pass up ;)

I didn't mention they are on here specifically for sape.
You're not too smart. Sape's been recently targeted and brought to the spotlight for what reason? Because people on here are talking about it...

How's that in any way funny to you? If you don't think google's lurking here in general and picking up on trending things as they come.. Then hurp durp.

In which case de-penguin my completely white hat site you bastards!!!

:)

Rubbish, of course Google knew about SAPE and had an eye on it for a longtime. Yes there are probably Google employees on this board just like any other IM/SEO forum.

No fucking shit buddy. You guys still don't seem to get what I'm saying or what's very obvious.
Sape's a hard network to take down, clearly. OF COURSE THEY KNEW ABOUT IT, it's effective.

Does it mean they allocated their resources into it when there were easier ones to focus on?
I guess it's just a MASSSSIVE coincidence that matt writes a tweet about ' naught russian link selling software ' and then google goes after 'another link network' and it's clearly targeting sape when all you ever hear is this link network now adays.
