SEO is certainly not everything. It is merely part of the toolset that you will need to master in order to have a chance of success. Yes, if your content isn’t searchable, then it may as well not exist, but think of the other extreme. A site with great SEO but bad/barely existent content will actually be harmful to your brand.
Please keep in mind that I am not downplaying the importance of SEO here, merely clarifying that I do not think that it is more important than the content.
Now, as for your question, I wouldn’t say that SEO is something that you can “learn” per se. You can get yourself acquainted with the basic principles of how it works and continue expanding and adapting your knowledge from there. Why? Because SEO never stays the same. And whenever you stop trying to stay up to date, you run the risk of being left in the dark.
If you accept that need for constant activity and updating your skillset (and sometimes even uprooting everything you know), then the BHW Beginner guide to SEO (you can find it to the left) is the perfect place to start. For everything else, just read the forums and stay up to date.
