How do you stay focused?

I plug in my headphones and disconnect from the outside world. I'm turning on chill music. Don't forget to take a break!

First things first: You need to eliminate distractions. While you can’t do away with everything, you can make an effort to reduce or get rid of as many distractions as possible.

Start with the simple things like:

  • moving to a quiet area
  • turning off notifications on your phone or turning your phone off altogether
  • closing the door to your office
  • telling those around you not to distract you for a period of time
  • closing out of programs or apps that aren’t essential on your computer

Man I don't think I will ever see those hours! What was it that lead you into realizing it?
Believe me, I never thought I would be up that early ... But I am practising this routine for nearly a decade now. It is so rewarding. My mind is clear, zero distractions and the rewarding feeling to have my work done by the time other people are leaving their house going to work.

Get your most important task done right when you get up. After about 2-3 hours our production drops dramatically.
Unless there is an emergency no one should be able to get in contact with you while your doing your important tasks as well

It's all discipline. If you want to be successful in IM, you must become accustomed to not having somebody else (a boss) telling you what to do. And I'll be very blunt and say 99% of people simply can't do it on their own... which is why 99% of people work traditional jobs.

Oddly enough, once you get into a rhythm, it's very similar to working a regular job.
  • Write out tasks you intend to accomplish before the end of the day
  • Set incremental breaks for yourself throughout the day to avoid burning out
  • Block out ANY and ALL distractions (Ex: turning off your phone & television)
  • Adjusting your workspace for maximum productivity (I rent out a private office; working at home is less effective for most people. Coffee shops are great too)
