I am struggling to stay disciplined and focused when working on my own projects. I feel like I repeat the same pattern.. ill spend a couple of days dreaming something up before I start to implement it, then with in a week or two I'm distracted and on to the next thing. It's frustrating as eventually I come full circle and repeat the cycle..

Anyone else have this problem or some tips on how I can move past it?

When your focus dances away even a bit, at that time, just think about your goals and you will get your focus back.
And do not forget to have around 2 hours of "me time" everyday (time spent relaxing) : that also helps towards remaining focused because to remain focussed, the mind and body needs a break everyday for a few hours, from one's regular routine (apart from good sleep of atleast 7 to 8 hours daily).

This is called Shiney Object Syndrom. The only way to overcome it is to start your project at full power and to not stop. When you gather some more experience, add the revenue potential/time estimation to the mix and prioritize your time based on it.

We call it the shiny things syndrom!

Many people have it.

My tip is: dont dream. Note stuff down maybe but never talk or daydream about projects.

Why? Your brain doesnt really know the difference between dream and reality.

Atleast not 100% and if you either talk or day dream to much, your brain thinks you have done it. It will give you a positive feeling for the achievement.

But when you actually do it, your brain is like: Man do i have to do it again, i thought thats already sorted....

Thats atleast how i fixed it.

Plan your week quickly as you can (roughly), plan your day in the morning or the night before (roughly)

During your work time, set a 3-minute timer on your mobile to ring, and each time it does, say to yourself as you reset it, "am I working on these relevant tasks?"

You should find yourself in all kinds of trouble to start with. :D But... You'll find it easier the more you practice it.

For me now, I know that if my timer isn't going off, I haven't even started focused working yet! lol

On a serious note, I personally leave notes in annoying places.

I've been using the pomodoro technique while working on a project for a while, I'm very distracted person, but it works well for me

use a simple Pomodoro Timer app that works on a desktop & mobile browser

Each Pomodoro is a 25-minute cycle followed by a 5-minute break.

Many factors might cause one to lose attention and become demotivated. Breaking down a goal into tasks, subtasks, and checklists is beneficial in my experience. I use ClickUp to plan and complete projects. Using paper and pen works just as well.

I've found this happened to me when I wasn't enjoying what I did.
If you're just doing it because you gotta do it you'll lose motivation pretty quick.
It's not bad to be in this position because it's all a part of growth.
If you think you've not found something
you actually want to do in life, just keep looking.
Meanwhile you can set goals for everyday. Hold yourself accountable and confront yourself at the end of the day if you don't accomplish your daily goal.

Everybody has this problem, even the most seasoned ones in here, myself, I just ignore the problem .. I tend to dream to much at times .. =)

Rock music. That helps me stay focused.

You mean work for 25 mins and then a 5 minute break and then repeat?

Most of the time I got distracted by YouTube or Daydreaming to another project, I really need the tips and help shared on this thread and also thanks for sharing everyone.

Sorry to mention again, but since this has to do with productivity (making money), I want to mention once again.
ATLEAST 1 OR 2 HOURS DAILY OF "ME TIME" (TIME RELAXING AND NOT THINKING ABOUT WORK AND DOING SOMETHING THAT RELAXES YOU) is very important even for remaining focused at work during the time you work. That relaxation refreshes the mind enabling better focus while at work.
No doubt there are other factors too. Even one's food (diet) plays a role and other factors too (as mentioned by others).
But, "ME TIME" is quite important.

Download Asana and start organizing your tasks , setting due dates, etc
