How do you select a Keyword?

I type several seed keywords into Ahrefs, then use filters to find keywords that meet ALL these requirements...

- keyword difficulty: between 0 and 3 (if I find a keyword with a KD higher than 3 I take a closer look at the other metrics to see if it justifies the effort)
- number of words: at least 5, but usually I pick keywords that are 7-8 words long
- number of backlinks of the websites ranking in top 10 of google: as many websites with 0 backlinks as possible. If you do your keyword research well you will oftentimes find keywords for which 8 or 9 of the websites ranking in top 10 have zero backlinks.
- keyword in title: if only a few of the websites ranking in top 10 have the keyword I'm interested in, in their tittle that's a good sign... providing that all other metrics are also decent and - more importantly - providing that most websites ranking in top 10 don't address the intent of the keyword very well. If the websites ranking in top 10 don't have the keyword in the title of their pages but the content of all those websites is extremely relevant to the intent of the keyword and address the topic of the keyword in detail I usually stay away from that keyword. But that's because I'm a big pansy and I only want keywords for which I can rank without effort and within a week if possible :D ... But if you're not like me and you're ok creating great content you might want to chase after that keyword
- topical relevancy of my competitors' websites.... if most, or all of my competitors have topical relevant sites I don't like it. I want to compete against general websites like wikipedia, quora, reddit, forums, facebook, pinterest, amazon, etc.... I don't want to compete against maniacs who work every day and churn content and backlinks 24/7 making it impossible for me, a simple and single dude having to do everything alone and manually. If I find other niche websites, created by other SEOers I usually stay the fuck away from that. Most experienced SEOers will tell you that that's a good sign because if you see other niche / affiliate sites ranking in top 10 for your keyword it means that you can break into that niche and rank for that keyword. Which is true, but it's a double-edged sword. If other SEOers like you can rank for that keyword it means that they will actively try to rank for that keyword, which means ongoing work you have to do to keep your spot. And this I don't like cause it puts pressure on me to keep working and... well, fuck working! I want easy, fast, delicious rankings all for myself, not to be forced to work everyday like a slave because morons with big budgets don't lift a finger but outsource everything to 3rd world workers while they just cash in.

And that's pretty much how I do it... or used to do it anyway, because today I saw that another google core update came on and apparently it shits on little guys like me even more. Today's update seems to favor (yet again) big budgeted sharks with high "authoritative" websites (read: websites with lots of powerful backlinks). So yeah, I'm not sure how much of my guide will still be valid after this update but you can try and see how it goes :)
Amazing share man.

what do you look to pick a keyword for your site?
Though there is not any specific rule to do so, the best thing you can do is to follow some of these tips & then find a relevant keyword for your site according to your market niche.
1. Competitor Analysis

3. Think Like a Customer

Choose your target audience and put yourself into the shoes of a customer at the time of choosing the right keywords. Ask yourself in your mind 'If I wanted to find one of these products or services on the search engine, what would I type into Google to get the desired results?

4. Use some Amazing Tools
Somewhere tools play an important role in choosing the right keyword for your brand with the same market niche. So, here i would like to mention some of the best Keyword Research Tools for your website:

I have two categories when it comes to the keywords: initial ranking keywords and later ranking keywords .

Initial ranking items are keywords, phrases, and questions that you're going to attack when setting up your blog.

These are keywords that few of your competitors go after.

I'm talking about keywords that return zero traffic and keyword difficulty when you analyze them through paid SEO tools.

Why should you target them?

Well, they are auto-suggested by Google or appear on Google auto complete.

Somehow, someway, somebody is searching for them.

Otherwise, they won't show up as Google auto-suggested keywords.

So if you start with a firm foundation of posts built around these keywords, you are more likely to rank for them.

There are fewer competitors.

And if your content is high-quality, you can dominate and build domain authority.

If you keep repeating this process, you will have dozens of pieces of ranking content.

The more your posts rank, the higher your domain authority goes up, and the more sites would naturally link to you.

Eventually, you can tell from your traffic volume that it's time to move to later ranking keywords.

These are the more competitive keywords.

They go to the heart of your niche, but many websites are competing for them.

They also have higher commercial intent, so you can make money from the traffic you get with these keywords if you rank for them.

This comes later.

First, you have to build a firm foundation of lower competition keywords.

That's how you play the game the smart way .

Otherwise, your competition will eat you up.

Imagine putting all this time, effort, and money to build up a blog to see it go nowhere because it's stuck in Google Sandbox for ages.

This is what happens when people attack high-competition keywords when they begin.

For the purpose of my explanation, I will use 2 examples The first will be a local business “Local Air conditioning Repair Service” in the city of Miami. The second will be a clothing boutique that has a brick and mortar and ships throughout the USA.

For the local air conditioning repair service business I begin my keyword research by going to the keyword planner tool by Google.

Here, I will enter the most broad keyword at the top of my head that is most relevant.

>> Enter “Aircon repair near me”

The results I will receive will show my keyword searches per month worldwide as well as relevant keywords. Before I move forward to the next step, I make sure that the search volume is specific to the areas I serve. Click on location, type in the area you serve.

Now, what I am looking for here is the keyword with the highest search volume monthly that is most relevant. It may or may not be the keyword I type.

To identify this, I click on the top of the average monthly search column. Then, the column should show keywords by highest to lowest.

Once that is done, I select 5 of the most relevant keywords from top to bottom In this case, it was

“air conditioning repair ”
“Airconditioning service Miami”
“Miami airconditioning repair”

Even though the keywords above look similar, you should create 3 separate pages for each keyword to get the highest probability of conversion when ranked.

it took much longer than I thought to write that and not sure if it makes sense or if anyone wants to know more but if you do… like this comment and I’ll add part two of how I would do keyword research differently in another case study.

First of all, I will collect the data of my competitors. Then I will analyse the keywords and anchors that they used for their site.

With the help of those keywords, I will research for the long tail and LSI keywords list.

USE KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOLS

Long tail keywords are a combination of three or more words or phrases.
While long tail keywords tend to boast lower search volumes,
they generally attract more relevant traffic, are typically less competitive,
and easier to rank well on. Choose long tail keywords that help to specify your product or service.

  1. Study the competition. ...
  2. Understand the long tail keyword. ...
  3. Use keyword research tools. ...

Hi,

Thanks everybody for sharing.

Keyword selection is extremely important as it directly affects your website's SEO. If you select a poor set of keywords, then not only will they have a negative effect on your ranking with the major search engines such as Google and Bing!

But also these keywords might not be searched for very often by people looking for products or services like yours.

On the other hand, using good keyword phrases (keywords that are searched for often) can improve your site's ranking and make reaching your audience easier.

Selecting the right keywords is quite difficult at first; however, there are some guidelines that can help select them successfully:

  • Choose descriptive words and phrases related to your product or service
  • Choose between 3 and 5 keywords to start with
  • Select your keywords from searches that have

what do you look to pick a keyword for your site?
I use some tools that serve for this purpose and check things like keyword difficulty to see how hard it will be for me to rank it high, then the level of competitiveness that it has in my targeted market, also monthly traffic volume that it has, which tendency it showed in the past couple of months, and so on. But even when I get these results I have to think about how my audience would search some query in reality, I need to discover some long-tail keywords that could be valuable, try out some combinations manually, even.
