How do you select a Keyword?

I type several seed keywords into Ahrefs, then use filters to find keywords that meet ALL these requirements...

- keyword difficulty: between 0 and 3 (if I find a keyword with a KD higher than 3 I take a closer look at the other metrics to see if it justifies the effort)
- number of words: at least 5, but usually I pick keywords that are 7-8 words long
- number of backlinks of the websites ranking in top 10 of google: as many websites with 0 backlinks as possible. If you do your keyword research well you will oftentimes find keywords for which 8 or 9 of the websites ranking in top 10 have zero backlinks.
- keyword in title: if only a few of the websites ranking in top 10 have the keyword I'm interested in, in their tittle that's a good sign... providing that all other metrics are also decent and - more importantly - providing that most websites ranking in top 10 don't address the intent of the keyword very well. If the websites ranking in top 10 don't have the keyword in the title of their pages but the content of all those websites is extremely relevant to the intent of the keyword and address the topic of the keyword in detail I usually stay away from that keyword. But that's because I'm a big pansy and I only want keywords for which I can rank without effort and within a week if possible :D ... But if you're not like me and you're ok creating great content you might want to chase after that keyword
- topical relevancy of my competitors' websites.... if most, or all of my competitors have topical relevant sites I don't like it. I want to compete against general websites like wikipedia, quora, reddit, forums, facebook, pinterest, amazon, etc.... I don't want to compete against maniacs who work every day and churn content and backlinks 24/7 making it impossible for me, a simple and single dude having to do everything alone and manually. If I find other niche websites, created by other SEOers I usually stay the fuck away from that. Most experienced SEOers will tell you that that's a good sign because if you see other niche / affiliate sites ranking in top 10 for your keyword it means that you can break into that niche and rank for that keyword. Which is true, but it's a double-edged sword. If other SEOers like you can rank for that keyword it means that they will actively try to rank for that keyword, which means ongoing work you have to do to keep your spot. And this I don't like cause it puts pressure on me to keep working and... well, fuck working! I want easy, fast, delicious rankings all for myself, not to be forced to work everyday like a slave because morons with big budgets don't lift a finger but outsource everything to 3rd world workers while they just cash in.

And that's pretty much how I do it... or used to do it anyway, because today I saw that another google core update came on and apparently it shits on little guys like me even more. Today's update seems to favor (yet again) big budgeted sharks with high "authoritative" websites (read: websites with lots of powerful backlinks). So yeah, I'm not sure how much of my guide will still be valid after this update but you can try and see how it goes :)

I did go with kd of 60 and 70. How do you manage to make money from so long tail keywords?

Ok. I can see. You rank in a week.

Do you target a non US/CA/UK country? I have found that ahrefs is unreliable for the country I'm targeting (IN)

Search volumes are way off, even their SERP results show different sites on top 10 when compared with what I see.

Even their backlink index seems to be way off then Google's. My site has close to 100 backlinks per Search Console; yet ahrefs shows only 9 (ahrefs bot is not blocked on these sites). How can a 3rd party be MORE picky than Google when it comes to backlinks!?

I only target USA.

The reason the SERPs are different to what Ahrefs shows when compared to what you see is because you are being served personalized results. If you want to see the real SERPs you need a VPN / proxy for the location you're interested in.

Regarding the backlinks... not even GSC shows all the backlinks you have. Actually, I don't think there's a single backlink checker on the market today that picks ALL of the backlinks.

Also, what I've noticed about Ahrefs (regarding search volumes of the keywords) is that they show way less search volume than what keywords actually get. If you click on the SERP link for any of the keyowrds you will see that most keywords get way more traffic than what Ahrefs shows. This is good in my opinion because if you target even keywords with 10 monthly visitors in reality you may receive 100s of visitors a month if you rank top 10 and your content is good. I've seen numerous times this week when I did keyword research in various niches keywords with 10, or 20 search volume (as depicted by Ahrefs, obviously) but when I clicked on SERP to check that keyword I've noticed that the site ranking at #8 for example got something like 3300 visitors instead of just 20 that Ahrefs showed. Which is nuts, and makes you never want to dismiss low search volume keywords. These numbers fluctuate so often and to such a high extent that you don't even know what's low competition anymore :)

Google is not trying to hide info from you. Why would they?

Long time it took you to realize ahrefs and semrush are useless beyond expired domains search. Good luck.

I agree that it is very sophisticated. But maybe he has no problems yet
Well, he just revealed his secret. He doesnt do it to make money. So yeah. He's just a great experimentator.

My respect to @tazarbm for revealing all this info and paying a monthly fee for ahrefs to tell forum users a lesson.

Ranking for a single keyword. What is this niche? Hyper unique hyper targeted service? This strategy sounds very specific.

selecting a keyword is pretty much as selecting a travel destination,
it all depends on how much do you have to invest and what you could make out of it,
you should really think about the possible ROI you'll get while aiming for such a keyword,
so, 3 main things to consider are the difficulty of the keyword, its search volume & its value compared to your budget, time willing to wait & money aiming to make

well said! You have pointed some major points

Go for KGR -Keyword Golden Ratio- long tail keywords.
Google it and you'll easily learn about it.
There are also tools to find them easily.
Afterwards, you can follow @tazarbm suggestions about competition etc.

Yes I know about it. I wanted to know how people are doing their keyword research

  1. Think like a customer. Identify your target audience and put yourself into the shoes of a customer when you create your initial list of keywords. ...
  2. Study the competition. ...
  3. Understand the long tail keyword. ...
  4. Use keyword research tools. ...
