How do you rank for certain keywords?

I own a domain related to weight loss. Say I want to rank for "losing weight by running" <-- In order to rank for this keyword, should I:

1) Create a category and call it "Losing Weight By Running" and have articles being fetched RSS that talks about Running or have RSS feeds that talk about anything that has to do with losing weight?
2) Should the permastructure then be %category%/%postname% or just %postname%?

What else would I need to do to rank for that keyword? What are all the things I should be doing to be ranking for certain keywords?

You should first focus on building backlinks because the weight loss niche is a tough one. Try to build BLs using as your main anchor text "losing weight by running" and some variations like "losing weight running" or "run to lose weight" and so on, you got the idea. Hope it helps.

Ok.

If there is main anchor text ->losing weight by running
how dense should the variation of the text be?
what tools should I use to get the keyword variation?
so I far I thought of is sematic latent index only using google
and google adwords tools.

How do I go about researching factors search as low competition count and low search volume?

If your contextual keyword density of the said keywords your trying to rank for, piled with having the keywords also in your H1 title or H2 titles, with it also in the permalink structure and meta included you should have a pretty good set up to begin building similarly anchored keyword backlinks back to those pages.

Id also consider where your RSS links are going. If they are external then they are leaking link juice, can you nofollow the links? or mask them through pages on your site?

How much text is on the page before the RSS links? Do you have 300-400 words static text at the top which is optimized in terms of keyword density and so on?

Maybe take a look at scribe SEO or some of the other tools to get your content perfect and beyond that I would concentrate on external ranking factors such as getting links.
