How do you know when a page needs a rewrite vs just an update?

Some pages need a full teardown, others just need fresh data/examples dropped in. What's your actual trigger for choosing one over the other?

look at search intent and performance first If the page is still relevant but missing fresh information update it if the intent structure or overall usefulness is off
 
Look at what it ranks for now versus what you wrote it for.

If it's ranking for the query you targeted but sitting lower than it should, that's an update. The page is understood; it just isn't the best answer anymore. Fresh data, better examples, fill in what competitors cover and you don't.

If it's ranking for something else, or nothing, the page isn't losing to better content. It's answering a different question than the one people are searching. No amount of fresh examples fixes that. Rewrite.

Same test for search intent. If the top results are all comparison tables and yours is a narrative essay, you're not competing, you're in the wrong format. That's a teardown.

in my case it depends on the page having a structural issue versus an issue where it simply has outdated information. in those instances where the intent nd rankings and structure are still sound then i pdate the information and examples. however in situations where the site isn’t driving any traffic with good content then i do a compllete overhaul of the page.
 
when you see article is deindexed by google or your content is too old, then you must dafinately update the content, because of outdated content google can hit your website and it can lose its traffic, so it is very important for every blogger or content creator to update their website content when it needs
 
I don’t decide only by age of the content. I look at impressions, CTR, rankings and user behavior. A 3-year-old page can still work with small updates, while a new page may need a rewrite if it fails to satisfy users.

I usually look at the reason the page is losing performance. If the structure, intent, or information is outdated, I’d go for a rewrite. If the page is still solid but the data, examples, or a few sections are outdated, a simple update is usually enough.
 
I usually look at whether the problem is structural or just stale. If the page has weak intent match, poor flow, outdated positioning, or consistently underperforms despite fresh content, I’d do a full teardown. If the structure still works and the main issue is outdated stats, examples, screenshots, or references, I’d refresh the data instead. Basically: fix the foundation when the page is broken; update the paint when the foundation still holds.

what i do usually i check intent and the gap between the page and current SERP leaders first. If the structure and intent are still right, I refresh data/examples; if the intent, depth, or overall structure is outdated, that's when I'd consider a full rewrite.

as far as i m concerned it would depend on how well that page is performing. if everything is fine reggarding its structure, intent nd ranking then maybe updating its information will be the solution. but if it is not doing well bcz of incorrect intent or quality content but low traffic i would choose to tear it down.
 
When the page is having impression without any clicks or ranking, then first, I always go for an update. The rewrite is preferred when there is an issue with the intent or the structure is obsolete.
 
I rewrite a page when search intent, structure, or main information is outdated. I update it when the topic still works but needs fresh examples, statistics, facts, or better details.
