How do you guys hire freelancers?

All of my ratings are 5 stars with a great review and I have a 99% overall rating and I still have trouble finding decent gigs even though I send high quality proposals and try to charge low.
There are just so many super cheap / shitty freelancers, it sucks sometimes.

* I think it's 99 because a client fucked up and clicked 4 instead of 5 stars once

I hire them from online games like Club Penguin or 8 Ball Pool.

Of course they can't dude. Photoshop has nothing to do with data entry. If you want someone who knows how to work Photoshop, pay the rate for such and stop trying to get by with paying date entry salary.

It's not like I am asking them to design anything or draw an illustration though. All I need them to do is to open one image file, crop a portion of it out and save the result as a X00 * Y00 image. That's it.

To find a quality thinker cum programmer it is always a challenge. But you can atleast filter out certain aspects to move closer to the right candidate.

1. Before hiring the freelancer you have to follow some strong checks about the suitability of the resource.
2. Use project management tools and techniques to closely track the resource.
3. Do not stick to one resource for all your projects
4. It is greatly advisable to hire a tester who can work to minimize your time.

Conduct a training session before hiring :-D
Jokes apart, its a bit tricky to have the best one. The problems you mentioned are general. I would suggest you to consider few points,

1) Before hiring, just check if they have already any ongoing project, if they do, your time will be compromised.
2) Client feedbacks are enough to prove their capability, must consider
3) Clearly mention the extra skills needed in the project

Well, reviews matter and the work quality with payout. How you are hiring people and the way you are observing them with workout.
@BassTrackerBoats written one thread about how to hire a freelancer for any job and how to treat them, may be some mistakes happening from your side. You are unable to understand them or they are not clear with your concept because 10 freelancers in 2 months being highest record for changing yourself for them and keep searching more.
You'll get thousand's of freelancer most of the sites who are proficient in data entry job or other task as per your requirement but before hiring more you have to understand why this happening to you. Here in BHW there are 2 sections one is HAF (hire a freelancer) and another marketplace where you find your provider easily but you have to check there reviews, way of working and you can also discuss with MOD's before hiring anyone. I hope they can help you either guide you in right path.

@BassTrackerBoats Please share that link with him, hope that thread help him while hiring any freelancer.

I am having the opposite problem. A lady wanted to hire me to write a series of nonfiction books for her. This is the second in the process she has ghosted me. And this is not the first time I had a potential client just up and disappeared without any explanation.

If you are hiring from upwork make sure to use the filters.

Only hire people with a 90%+ job completion record and 1000+ hours billed, then from the remaining ones take a look at their feedback from previous jobs.

Remove any that have even a single bad review.

Lastly make sure they are messaging you with points about your specific job rather than a copy and paste email that they send to every prospective client.

These simple rules have served me well and it's ver rare that I hire a bad freelancer now.

The best thing you can do when hiring a freelancer is to write out the scope of the work in a list.

1.
2.
3.

etc.

I do this for all the work that I need doing, if someone picks It up straight away and asks me questions regarding the work or a portion they don't understand then I will hire them.

If you're hiring people for content writing and expecting to pay less than $2-4/ 100 then you will more than likely get shit.

Wow this post was exactly I was looking for..!
I would say just work with some local freelancers with whom you can meet in person.. that would be easy.. hire locals..

I have exp hiring tons of freelancers via upwork.
Already spend more than $200k+

Here's my experience..

1. Do not hire freelance from India, Pakistan (sorry not try to be generalize.. I believe not all, but majority of them provide shitty quality of work). :/

If you want cheap and high quality of work, I prefer Philippine.

2. Only choose freelance that have:

- 100% success rate (i got scammed previously even he got 90% positive rating, i also got scam from freelance with 0 rate, because he was new, since he work in big company, and the way he explained technically how he gonna perform the task, and yet few months later he still cant finish the job. Conclusion, always choose freelance with >99% rating and above, unless the task is very easy task.

- >$20k Total Earned

- >500 hours of worked
(the more the better, I prefer >1000 and above)

- >20 jobs complete (not a single negative rate)

- Do not hire agency, because the cost gonna get triple expensive. Because for just for a simple job, they will setup team with project manager, customer support and other complex stuff with JIRA/Basecamp witch is you don't even need it.

- Russia and Ukraine programmer are pretty famous nowadays. Their quality of work kind of good too. But be careful, they gonna suck your money dry. Always act 'cheapskate' when you want to deal with them.

- When hiring someone, choose pay by hour, not fixed. Because sometime the task can be complete less than 1 hour, but the programmer will quote you like $500-$1000..
we also din't even know if he/she really working or just watching NETFLIX?
Pay by hour is also good +lower your risk from getting scammed. Because it got video, and system that will track freelance mouse movement, keyboard, screenshot, etc.., any problem if they try to scam you, you can contact upwork engineer and they will just view the video, system tracker, and see what the freelance really does.
Couldn't agree more I don't hire agents from India & Pakistan either, Just a waste of time.. They try to act smart in order to make a quick buck and are way too lazy (again not generalizing) but i have worked with a handful Not recommended ..

I have been working with guys from Philippines and puerto rico (not really how i got a guy from here but he is good) so far no complaints.
