How do you find premium content writers?

I'm in the process of building a site for my new brand and need premium written content. I've used BHW marketplace many times but it's just not the quality I'm looking for on my new site. Budget is not a concern, I'm willing to pay for great content.

What's your method of finding top level writers?

When I interview, I ick a keyword, describe the style I want(provide examples as needed), then see what they send.
I then buy from the top 3, different focuses. I post them and see which ranks/engages/does what I want. Then buy double from the top 2, and again wait and see. If one writer jumps to the top, I use them, if they are equal, I keep ordering from both. Usually after 3-4 orders(30-50 articles), I'll start auditioning new writers, to keep the pool refreshed in case one starts running behind, slacks off, etc...
I try to keep rotating 3-4 solid writers so as to avoid issues.

If a writer submits junk after a few orders, do not be afraid to call them on it, demand the quality come back or a refund.

If a writer submits examples that don't meet any guidelines, but promises to provide what you want when you order, dump them.

Don't worry about hurting feelings, this is business!
 
When I had some experience with content writers I searched some on Upwork and asked for their article examples to see the style.
On this stage lots of writers drop off, but that's good as you see how devoted your vendor can be.
Pick up from those whose style impresses you the most.
 
You can find few gems on Twitter too. Just reach out to the guys and do a little chat for getting the samples before you decide to purchase.
 
Hi, @CrustyBillyGoat. I suggest that you interview the owners of the top 10 most viewed marketplace threads (of content) on BHW.
Better yet, order one article from each of them.

I've now interviewed a total of 137 writers for my agency. Our of those we've hired 14 part time and are still looking for more. You just have to put in the time.
 
Interviewing writers seems to be the way to go, but more importantly, you need to have an idea on what you require. The more information you provide, the better the work that they could do for you.
 
Honestly, I just use Upwork. I have the advantage that I have a background in journalism/publishing and have many years of experience training new writers to conform to high high magazine standards. Which means I can find graduates for very cheap on Upwork and train them in a few weeks to be excellent writers.

With a bit of subediting and proofreading, their work surpasses any journalist i've seen out there. All for $2.50/100 words :)

Can confirm, Upwork has some great writers although it can be hit and miss sometimes. Read up on their reviews
 
Usually I use upwork.com, where you can easily find native speakers. But non-native are also good and they don't ask so much money xD Moreover, it is a good place to find someone for infographics, presentation, or even animation video.

You test the writers out. The samples are the best version of the writer's work. So there's no way around testing them out. If you don't like the outcome, throw them in the box of never-try-again-service.

However, if you are talking about copywriting, that's an entirely different ballgame. Copywriting is harder, and always go for a veteran if you love conversions. They come expensive but definitely are worth it.

And I remember once a client paid me $300 for a single page, meaning that, smart business owners actually know the value of copy.
 
Test the writers by providing a small job and if your audience like/convert with their work, hire them.
 
I've been a lurker forever, but I wanted to chime in. I'm not trying to self-promote, but I'm a writer (and would love to help)

But, I've edited for and dealt with a lot of writers and the biggest thing you need to watch is how they process information. Do they follow your directions for your sample request?

I jumped on Upwork to try to get more business and looking over other people's needs, a lot of people seem to not know what they want. Since you're here, you obviously know what you're looking for content wise, but make sure that you can convey your ideas to whoever you hire so they can make the best of it.

I've written and edited over 500 articles and edited at least 500 other writers' works.

My best method for finding premium writers has been to contact writers on blogs I respect. Why would I hire someone who I don't read? The drawback, of course, is they expect high pay, but if I can afford it then it's well worth it. Usually spend about $100 per 1000 words.
