How do you become so good at SEO

For all the SEO gurus out there, how did you guys become so good ? I am web developer and software developer and have learned so many things and usually i do pretty well when it comes to computer related skills, but man i just suck at SEO.

Practice, making sites and throwing links and failed and sometime success. IT just suck but in the end you learn it how to do it.
 
If you have been here 3 years and still suck at it then it's just not your thing mate. Either you are lacking the drive to create the proper backlinks yourself, the money to buy the right services or the knowledge to know what is great, good, ok and bad. Whichever of those 3 issues is holding you back, 3 years in, you should have started to figure it out by now.

Of course to "suck" is relative. There are professional athletes that some people will say suck but those guys are better than 99.9% of every other human on earth at their selective sport. So perhaps you are just being too hard on yourself.

Honestly, I didn't take much time and effort and focus to learn to do SEO. It seems to me that there is a lack of a proper structured "course" on SEO you can find online unlike some other skills. Yeah I guess I should take more time to practice ranking my own websites.
 
Fail and fail again. Make a website and target keywords. Start with low competition keywords and use a SERP tracker once you see improvements move into bigger keywords.

Domain plus hosting isn't too much. And you can write your own content

SEO is all about Knowledge & experience. The methods of Programming or web development will be same for years, but to get success over SEO you have to be updated as always with the new Algo & with new techniques.
 
Nowhere near guru status, but at least it's making me a small sum of money. Just keep trying methods until you find something that works, then SCALE. You're now a guru. =)

Now sell courses... lol
 
Train yourself in basic HTML especially in meta tag and href commands and also in wordpress,joomla or any other CMS platforms. Subscribe to SEO blogs and review the SEO websites and how to videos on youtube. Finally keep Practicing you will become good at SEO
 
It's all about trying.
Finding new ways.
Following new ideas.
 
Start out with a handful of churn and burn sites to test on, keep a track of what you're doing, when you are doing it and what the outcome is.

It's fine following people walk through guides, but better to put your own twist on things too.

Experiment, learn from your mistakes, adapt and improve.
 
Let's put it this way. Being good at it doesn't happen overnight. It would take months and even years of experience to be able to be good at it. You'll have go through hundreds of trial and error sessions to find the best formula for the things you want to happen. You learn from the errors and you become better.

Just keep grinding. We all have our strength and weaknesses - you just got to keep up with what works what's trendy and be able to have some vision of what will be coming around the corner.

Not a guru, but I have done it for some time. I use two ways to improve:
- just do it; the more you do the more you know,
- learn from the best; find who the best SEO are and follow them.

As you are a developer, I would focus on SEO tools, this is where you can develop the most (no pun intented), and there is always a need for better smarter tools.
 
There are also so many threads here in BHW that can help you get started and can help you improve. Ask questions and learn from other people :) Every piece of knowledge you get can bring a huge difference in the things you do.
