From my experience, SEMRush has the most accurate data on backlinks followed by Ahrefs. These two are industry-leading as of now.

Ahrefs is good, it is what I use and so far I've been happy with it.

Just google "good backlink checker tools", you will get your answer. Learn to google, it's much faster to learn that way.

Ahrefs is generally my go to - however, combining Ahrefs & Majestic for TF/CF is very powerful

I'll be honest. I do not trust free tools as they often lack the proper database and may give incorrect details. This may sometime make you believe that the competitor is easy to outrank when in reality, they aren't.
To get started, I'd recommend using Ahrefs free backlink checker tool - https://ahrefs.com/backlink-checker
It shows up to 100 backlinks to give you a general idea.
Next, search with https://neilpatel.com/backlinks/ to get some more data.
These two should give you a very good & somewhat accurate idea.

Mostly I use Ahrefs for backlinks check, I think they have more data than other tools.
