Hey guys, I had a site I pretty much didn't care about and I let the hosting expire on it. Since I had other things to deal with, it took me about a month to get around to hosting the site somewhere else.
The funny thing is: When I got it up and running again and checked Google webmaster tools to make sure it was indexed OK, there were a ton of spammy search results for the site.
Say the site was mysite.com and it was about finding scholarships, it had many, many results (according to Google) in the top 5 for searches like "HI5 video" or "the video HI5", and even results in the top 10 for nonexistent URLs like mysite.com/kimbo_slice.
These results are all deindexed now, but were actually bringing me traffic and making me money for a couple of weeks.
My questions are: 1)How did they do this (When my domain nameservers hadn't been repointed anywhere)? I'm just thinking if someone could tell me how to do this legitimately, it would be a valuable promotional technique
2)How would it benefit somebody to create a bunch of search results that point to a URL they don't own, and even to nonexistent URLs? In other words, why would somebody bother doing whatever they did just to send traffic to a 404 page?
If anyone has any insight into this, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks
