How did you learn SEO when you first started?

There are so many blogs, YouTube channels and online courses available that it's difficult to know to begin. I'm curious how experienced members here learned SEO when they first started Did you follow a structure path or learn mostly through trial and error?

learning took pace when I realized that I need to stop reading too much about seo and start experimenting on my own. It sems that practical experiece I gain through experiment is more valuable than reading for several months.

Much the same here, 20 years ago. Scouring the internet for reputable directories, 'stumblin upon' pal's websites in order for them to do the same to me, trying so hard to play nice with google - all sorts of stuff. Was good fun. I'd do 8 hours of this after a day in the office in the city. Loved it.
And then I stopped and now... well I am thinking I am gonna try and re-learn everything :-)
 
Don't get stuck on too much information, that's what I say. Build a simple site and start trying what you've learned from one source. Real-life experiences taught me more than any class ever could. That's how I made most of my progress.
 
It is like keep doing it until you see some signs of success.
It dont matter you are doing it correctly or not, as long as you are trying things and not looking to escape from doing efforts, you will be get better at everytime on what you do
 
I learned basic steps the practiced on small website. Testing keyword content and link
 
When I first started, I learned mostly through trial and error I read SEO blogs, watched YouTube tutorials and then tested everything on my own websites

The practical experience taught me much more than any course

My advice is to learn the basics first and start applying them on a real site as soon as possible
 
Tbh one of the main reasons i entered bhw was for that.... but i've been developing sites, ecommerces and some other projects for quite a while now, always trying some stuff i read here and in the internet, prety much as almost all people here

I learned SEO through an internship and by working on real projects rather than following courses. Real world work teaches you things no course can, especially when you have to solve actual problems. Most of my learning came from hands on experience and mistakes along the way.
 
I started by reading blogs and watching youtube videos but I learned the most by working on my own website and testing things myself. Trial and errors taught me more than any course.
 
I started by reading blogs watching you tube vieos and then testing what I learned on my own websites. ractical tseting teaches you much more than just consuming courses and tutorials.

The SEO lesson came from fails story not a success story
 
When I started you could tweak page at 10 AM and 10:20 you could check the new ranking by just resubmitting the URL

This gave us early SEOs a huge advantage, seeing the algorithm working live

Then came all the bullshit, googleguy and so on and SEO was dead from there on
 
I mostly learned through trial and error. Reading blogs , watching you tube videos things on my own helped me understand seo much better overtime.
 
Great question! I learned SEO by combining free resources with lots of trial and error. Real projects taught me far more than any course. Looking forward to everyone's recommendations.
 
TBH just trying different things. There's a lot of free guides for the basics which is like 90% of the work.
 
you should first by combining good learning resources with hands on practice. blogs and videos help but working on real websites teaches you much more through experience.
 
I started with YouTube tutorials and free blogs, then built a few test websites to learn through trial and error. Reading SEO forums and following Google's updates helped me understand what actually works. In my experience, practical testing teaches much more than just watching videos.

I would start by studying the top ranking pages in my niche and then try to create something better structured and more useful than what already exists.
