How did you learn English?

I was taught English by my parents from an early age alongside 2 other languages, so it’s pretty much native to me. Nowadays I’m polishing my French and starting to learn Japanese. I would advice you to check out this subreddit, which I use extensively: https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/ It’s a good place to start your language learning journey and you can find many recourses, tips and discussions on how to learn any language. While still being in school, I played video games, watched English movies and anime with English subtitles. Later on I spent summers working in UK and practicing spoken language and now I work in the industry where 90% of the time I use English language. I also read books in English only and if I don't know a word, I'll translate it as well as I try to use them when communicating with people.

So my advice is to listen a lot, read a lot and try to practice talking with people whenever possible, be it online or offline.

By watching TV Shows with subtitles.. then communicating in forums like stackoverflow.. then i learned the grammar and stuff.

I liked English when I was in school, so did well and learnt the basics... I then moved to the UK, and my basics weren't worth sh*t obviously. I always made a point of trying to communicate in English with everyone, people from my country included, watched lots of TV, movies, radio shows, at the start with subs (you have to get rid of them at some point, or you won't improve) and lots and lots of conversation. Conversation is key when trying to learn a new language.

I can't remember the site, but there's a very good one where you can find teachers/tutor for just conversation. Online gaming could also help.

Well, school and college, cartoons, News channels, Newspaper etc. My elder brother and father have post graduate degree in English literature. that helped as well. :)

I never really "studied' english in a traditional way, but was still on of the best in english Class
 
I literally learned English from video games and Reading novels and mostly from English movies !
 
I was very bad in school. I left school when i was 13.

When it comes to sruff like math and so on, i learned it through courses (6 Months). Im a fast learner.

English wasnt really a requirement and i just learned it by watching a lot of YouTube lets plays and stuff like that. It was fun for me and i learned it slowly but steady.

Today im doing good i guess. Maybe it isnt perfect. Still found a good job a week ago (building a saas for a company)

There is an app EWA in app store. Very cool. Also I watch Netflix with subtitles. The main thing is to choose English media instead of your native language even if you understand only 20% of words. You should dive your head into English and I promise that you'll succeed less than in a year. After school my English was A2 level, now it's B2.

Just do it, bro! :cool:

Haha funny you say that, because I'm actually trying this with japanese right now
I can understand very basic stuff already
I'm also using flash card learning with Anki to aquire some Base Level vocab, this helps to get started

But yea, it's very different since you have to learn 3 different alphabets and then there is also this Pitch Intonation stuff thats a headache
 
Don't rely on teachers at school. You have to communicate with people to learn, or maybe take private courses.

Flash cards do help a lot I think, but yeah, anything that uses a different alphabet is a bitch to learn, especially because it comes from a totally different language group.... but we're diverging here

if you know a little bit of grammar, you can hone your spoken english by listening to scripts in english. you may also watch english shows and movies!
 
For me it's started when i was 7 years old using internet in Home PC after that i started learning English in school and then i started watching movies with english subtitles and after a while i started using Forums and use everything in english language, although my native language is Arabic and we don't use english in my city!
 
When I was young in English classes I was able to conjugate the English phrases and the verbs without knowing why.

One time the teacher gave me a hard time because she was trying to explain to me how to form the verbs.

I would form the phrases depending on how well it sounded on my mind.

I attribute this to the movies I watched when I was a kid.


So, get a tutor, register to some online classes and watch many English movies.

And don't give up you will learn English if you really want it
