Content is the important one for rankings OP.
You must give Quality and unique content for your site.
Apart from other ways to get rankings Content is the first one to get rankings.
Make your content more and more quality.

Though some people may disagree but I think good content will put you in a nice position to rank.
A couple of months back, I got a low competition keyword. I put up a wordpress site and post a 2000 word article on the front page. In like a week I was ranking for a lot of keywords, some of these on page 2 and 3 of Google. It was hard to believe and I had to consult some experienced members here. I can only attribute this to the content (I wrote it myself) and on-page optimization.
Now my writing jobs don't give me much time on that website. I believe if I can shoot it with some guest posts and web 2.0s, some of those keywords should make page 1.

Didn't you come across the famous line "Content is King"? Content is the backbone of any website/blog. You can express your ideas through words, videos, images to the readers. Quality content is the one helps to rank higher and also helps to drive traffic.
