How can I outrank a dirty competitor?

Well ... I'm doing SEO on a niche of mine, the safe way ... basically I'm working on it for over 3 months, managed to get it in the first page, was #4 in google. Then ... out of nowere, a guy with another site comes up above me 1 position, now I'm #5th.

I checked out his backlinks on ahrefs, it has only 1 backlink, but ... what kind of backlink? ow.ly backlink, basically a shortened link spammed to hell, it has around 3,000 backlinks.

How can I outrank that guy? Or ... when the google will penalize him if they will ... ?

I would do what he did, with a new site.
 
What is "the safe way" exactly? If you're doing actual white hat stuff you'll be getting editorial links that will never go away and building authority over time. Churn and burn sites will come and go but you'll get harder to outrank over time.

If you're putting 3 months of effort to do "safer" blackhat, you're basically investing in something only slightly less temporary. At the end of the day when your link building methods aren't effective and it slips into obscurity, you'll end up wishing you just spent all that time building a site a day and throwing 3,000 links at it.
 
Isn't that method only for churn & burn only? I'm sure he will get penalized in a couple of months
 
That's the discouraging thing when doing whitehat. You just have to think that he will get penalized while you are there for the long run

Problem on here is there's a fucked up definition of white hat, that's what I'm concerned for this guy about. If you do anything that could be called "link building" you're doing something some shade of black. People always called article submissions white hat and we all know what happened to rankings that depended on those. Worst thing you can do is fool yourself into thinking what you're doing is WH and have an update wreck you.
 
Basically what I do is all manual work ... web 2.0s, forum profiles, social bookmarks, things like that.
 
You can create another site or web 2.0, during the same strategy as him and link that buffer site to your money site.

So you can rank both buffer site and money site. But you shouldn't leave footprint, if you are also trying to monetize the buffer site, remember to shortern your monetizing link, so youi will not leave any footprint.

two options :
1. add more 3 months for you "keep your work", or
2. build new site using that strategy

It may be considered as a churn and burn method, used with other churn and burn methods, but out of five sites that I just used a url shortener on and spammed it, none of the sites have been hit yet, and they have done well for the past three month or so.
 
Their are tools out their to block spiders from ahrefs, majestic, and open site explorer from reporting links on them. Spyder Spanker is one of them that a lot of people with private blog networks use. Just because you only see the ow.ly link does not mean their are not links from high PR or DA sites linking back to his money site.

If you want to try and hurt him, you can always attempt to blast his site with tons of links to his money page using the primary keyword. It really mess up the keyword diversity that Google really seems to look at lately. While this doesn't gaurentee a ranking drop, it wouldn't help his site either.
 
I say, keep doing what you do at build a nice authority site. It may take longer but in my experience it's really worth it.
 
but that's not really fair play, is it? after all, the guy is trying to make a buck - granted, he's taking the short road, but still we're talking about neg seo-ing one of our peers
 
I would do that he did, but with a buffer tier so you don't get penalized.
 
You dont have to do anything. Sites like that can last for weeks, your site can last forever. Just wait and be patient.

You are an asshole for even suggesting this. It'll probably only start a war and none of you will end up ranking.

And OP, you are not doing whitehat, it's still blackhat. You are just doing things slowly. As others has suggested, why not just replicate what he's doing on another site? It's obviously working great for your niche and you have a clear strategy right in front of you. Just build more links than you competitor.
 
Ignore suggestions for neg seo, not worth it, it's bs and does nobody any good. Do what people suggested in here by replicating his plan or just build more solid, quality links provided your on-page is in order.
