What kind of stuff were you submitting in a press release?
Notany news sites want to cover a press release about people sugar babies/daddies/mommies/creepy uncles.

With the right budget this would be an awesome site to properly promoted, easy PBNs, press everything, lots of great ways to promote this site to get it in front of people, think WAY outside the box in mainstream channel promotion. With the right creative thinking you could get a Huffpo, Forbes, time mag link.

Also try backpage.com. This is good for the dating niche. Also, advertising this in on some college campuses might be a good idea too.

It is difficult to get traffic from dating site. Because so many dating sites were there. To get traffic, you need to work with social media (like reddit, google plus etc), press release etc.

I think you have tried many attempts to increase your site traffic already like social media, press release, etc... Did you try to get backlinks from real trafficked niche blogs? There are so many premium blogs with real traffic and users in your industry, if you already tried this method it have been good otherwise you have to try this method to get backlinks from those sites then automatically your site metrics will go up and also it will helps to increase your website traffic and authority. I think these types of backlinks will be costlier than usual but it will be more worthy for your project

Real trafficked niche blogs? You mean personal blog or blog site... But we haven't tried this method before that sounds good! Facebook local ads and PPC would help you drive traffic. Do the directory submissions, classified submissions and build some other quality links. Optimize your homepage (meta information) with the traffic generating keywords before start building the links. I just checked it.you just optimized it for your brand.
