Yeah you're right. Though, I believe that is a rare event. I've had fake info on my domain for 5 years now and I haven't been caught. I don't think they would look unless you had a suspicious site.
But you're definently right, it's risky.

Overselling just means that they sell more resources than they have. For example, say I had 100GB of space on my server. I then sell three hosting packages claiming they have 50GB of space. In total, I just sold 150GB of space on my 100GB server. I just oversold. Those 3 people don't actually have 50GB of space, in reality they only have 33.3GB. Those hosts do this because chances are most people wont use 50GB, but if all 3 people did, then they'll usually suspend you or charge you extra.
Finding a good host is hard. But just remember, your host is an investment. Do not look for the cheapest possible - look for the best! Before you buy hosting check a few things:
1. Look at reviews online. If there aren't a lot of reviews, don't risk it. Chances are it's just a kid in his basement.
2. Note where you found the host. If you found the host on DigitalPoint, don't buy. Unless, of course, it was recommended by someone else.
3. Look at the money back policy. Ensure they offer money back for 30 days under ANY conditions. A lot of sites say they do, but only under certain circumstances.

Wrong I offer hosting for under 5.00 a month but it is only 500MB that is for people starting out who does not have alot of money. I personally do not oversell .
You have to look at WHAT you are getting for that price. Most host try to have one plan for those who do not have alot of money and who are just starting out.
Now if I was offering unlimited for 5.00 yes chances are that is a scam or 5GB for 5.00 yes once again probably a scam.
You get the private who-is from your domain register. Not the host.

Hey Spellz If you go to namecheapdotcom they have Domain Guard which is supposed to keep your whois info private it is free when you purchase a domain through their company, or they sell the whois guard really cheap but it can only be applied to domains that you have registered with namecheap Hope this helps. an easy way to do research is to google the name of the company and then add the word 'complaint' afterwards. like this:
+hostgator +complaint

I tell people that all the time. There is no MAGIC drive they are going to put you on that has unlimited space with unlimited bandwith. It just can not happen.
Hostgator is a fraud hosting company. Not saying they are bad but I am saying they are a fraud because they are tricking people into believing that they have unlimited everything which in fact is not true and impossible.
These types of companies should be shut down.
In there small print if you use so many inodes they will shut down your site anyway.
