Are backlinks still working as a ranking signal for you, or more as a trust stabilizer?

I’m seeing cases where links don’t push rankings up, but prevent drops during volatility.

Curious:
  • Are links moving positions for you, or just holding them?
  • Any niches where this changed recently?
Just learning from shared experience.

Sites that are dynamic in some way are working. If you build a site, abandon it, and then keep building a ton of backlinks, it may not work. Even for static sites like SaaS or service providers, it's better to engage with people on social media pages to keep the brand alive.
 
Backlinks are still a ranking signal, but in 2025 they function a lot like a stability anchor more often than a pure growth driver.

They do push rankings. But you need very high quality links for this.

You need links for both , to push rankings up and also to maintain rankings.
 
Links are still king. Just that links aren't equal, high engagement high PR links are worth a lot more than static links with no engagement. Behavior is a big part in ranking links now
 
As mentioned above, links do work both ways... increase and maintain rankings.
You need links to maintain, not because google discredit your old links but because your competitors build more to outrank you.

Backlinks still matter, but mostly as a ranking stabilizer, not a growth lever.
They rarely push pages up on their own, but they prevent drops during volatility.
 
links mostly act as a safety net now, they rarely push rankings unless the page is already solid. in some high-competition niches i've noticed they barely move positions at all

They are still a ranking signal but with reddit and other social sites ranking so well I would but more budget behind posting in already ranking reddit threads for target keywords and upvoting comments to the top.
