Been doing a lot of links in the last 3-7 days to tier 1s and 2s. All suddenly I see my home page disappear and when I checked site:xxx.com its no longer indexed in Google.

Check in GWT, nothing in there.

Anybody experienced this before ? Is it a penalty ? Or Google dance. Should I just leave it couple of days to see what happens ?

Thanks

normally sites do not get deindexed just like that; how old is the site; does it rank for anything?

It ranked for a lot of keywords on top first page. It is couple of years old. Very strange.

when you say it "ranked", do you mean it does not rank for anything now? if which case it looks like penalty; or does it still rank for something?

Homepage does not rank for anything anymore because it's not indexed in google when I checked site:xxx.com but other pages on the website are ranking fine.

it could be a fluke (temporary), but it is not dance and does not really look too much like a penalty (?);
at this stage there are too many question marks for me:
- was there overall loss in traffic for the site?
- which is/was the main page(s)? homepage or internal pages
- homepage ranked for how many keywords, compared to internal pages
- did you link to homepage mostly or other pages

If the homepage got deindexed after being ranked, then I don't think it's temporary. You've been building a lot of links as you mentioned and that's the reason why it got deindexed. Manual penalties appear in GWT a few days later after they are applied.

that is just a wild guess so don't talk like its a fact. you don't know and can't possibly tell what happened without even taking a look at the site nor data.
you just assume things, so that doesn't help the guy. its unlikely that only the homepage link would be deindexed (especially for only sending links to tiers, makes no sense), it could also be the site structure and google simply decided the other pages are more relevant and maybe the main page didn't have enough content (or similar as on another site that ranks). then it could also be the sitemap, it could be some SEO plugin, maybe he set the main page to noindex by accident who knows, there can be many reasons.

try adding some extra content to the homepage, then ping it and also send some links to the homepage itself no tiers and wait a bit it should come back if the rest of the site is still live.
otherwise make sure you don't have any weird settings like the homepage being set to noindex for some reason lol

I have had my homepage disappear and then after a few days just reappear again and no penalty. The fact your inner pages are still ranking means this could be the case for you too. So dont do anything or change anything and just wait like a week and hope the homepage comes back. Check your sitemap, robots file and htaccess files also to make sure everything is normal.

5 years doing this and I've never seen anything like this. It appears than it disappears, appears again and disappears again.

Will look for sitemap, robots file and htaccess files and report back.

This happened to me and that was because an error occured when crawling my homepage. All the lonks pointing to the homepage were gone as well bit all came back when the error was fixed.

got the same thing, almost all the wp blogs' home page disappeared this morning, and they just normal last night,it got me crazy !

Looks like there's something like Penalty from Google. Check for notice in webmaster tools?

100% Agreed with this.

In most cases it reappears less than in 24H. Hopefully it will :)

Other page links got indexed and showing any result?
just check with hosting also

Many my site deindex after -+1 month because I build hotlink site with fake sitemap. No one attention from GWT

Not sure how "I don't think" formulation can be taken for a fact. I wasn't stating a fact, it was my opinion. And of course, based on the partial information provided, it's a guess. It's always a guess when you are trying to diagnose something without seeing it. I merely stated what's more probable to me personally. I hope OPs homepage will get indexed and I will gladly admit my guess was wrong.

And these are not "assumptions"? If people were to post only information they are sure about in threads like these, there would be silence.

So please, read my posts carefully next time you decide to preach to me about logic of arguments, thank you.

This simply does not happen to X years old sites. Normal with new sites, but not with established ones. And even if this actually happened, the page would still be indexed and replaced in Serp by the inner page. Content cannibalization.

Just try this >>Fetch or Fetch and Rendor the site using search console or else try updating the new sitemap.xml

Hope this will help :)

you said quote: "You've been building a lot of links as you mentioned and that's the reason why it got deindexed"
that is stated as if it was a fact, the "i don't think" of you was reffering to the issue being temporary. also i made assumptions yes, so? that was the whole point of my post.... i made it clear that there could be many reasons and named a few. its not like i said i know its a penalty and this and that is the reason. maybe you should read your own posts properly and mine as well instead of getting upset that someone points out your mistakes.

oh and in other news yes it can happen to X year old sites. if there is an error it doesn't matter how old the site is :P
