Would this work if you just bought an old domain with nothing on the site? Or do you need something that Goog has indexed to give it some history??

I think its not just the age of the domain, i think its the age the domains been in the index for. See for me most of my domains I age, so they have been sitting in the index for a long time, somtimes 2 years, with just a few pages. I try to snap up 100 .info domains over teh course of a year, add like 10 static pages to the site and just forget about them until I am ready to start doing stuff with them.
I like .info's because it doesn't cost me that much money to keep them registered, as opposed to .coms
