What I did in the beginning was to try and read every sub-forum's first page topics - like all of them - no matter if I liked them or not - just to get the feeling of the forum.
Once you know your way around - it's easier to find value in topics that interest you.
Another good thing to do is to focus on the sticky threads on each sub-forum.
If they're sticky, there's got to be a reason for that.
