Start reading around BHW there is lots of great information! Just be sure you take action as you continue researching as reading around here can sometimes get addictive

It's all about unique content at the minute, and lots of it. If you have enough you will start getting long tail traffic. You then need to build links to rank for more competitive terms.
You can also build good traffic with social media e.g.

Google+
Stumble upon
Digg
Reddit
