You can try 000webhost it always works for me for small or test projects, but for more serious stuff go with cheap hosting, use the search, there are tons of threads with recommendations of hosting.
I would avoid free hosting, the decent free webhosts include ads on your webpages, the bad ones are unreliable, full of spammy websites on the same IP etc.
You can get hosting for less than $5 a year if you look around
I suggest you not to use free hosting, because usually its limited, you get not much resources and so on - so its good just for testings and for micro projects - and usually if you have enough money to buy domain I think you can find few additional bucks for a normal hosting, because on free hosting you dont get any guarantees - so far I've tested free hostings I got many network interuptions and other issues
loosen the purse strings a little. You can pick up hosting for like a $1 a month.
Even cheap hosting is better than free hosting. Free hosts typically feature adverts on your page which are outbound links, so you're losing customers/link juice right out of the gates.
