One company sent me $1000 for the job, but I got $957.80. PayPal says the fee was $42.20

When I google various PayPal Fee calculators, most tell me that the fee should be $35.39

That's exactly how PayPal works. If you get paid via Goods and services you'd pay a few usually around 4.5% it goes up and down slightly. Yours is 4.2%.

If they had sent it via Friends and family(fnf), you won't be charged fee.

There’s no explaining the fees. You just sponsored some clown’s evening with the boys, a jug of beer and a steak sandwich.

If you intend to use PP again, just ask for the fees to be included when the payment is sent out.

You have to check their fees (https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees). Not a third party calculator.

As for paypal fees... if they didn't had so many people hooked they wouldn't last a day.

Ass&^#s. Whenever I can I avoid using them.

I use them mostly for small things that I buy or sell...

Paypal charges what they want and when you will ask them they will give you a shitty explanation.
