Yeah, they wanted a receipt for tax purposes so i made a reciept/contract stating i had recevied xxx amount on xxx date, and would receive the rest on or before 14.12

I would talk to them and ask for payment or you will take down the site. If you can not buy for your kids neither should they. It is not your problem or fault that their shop is not doing well.

Ive thought about it, but i cant bring myself to do it. Im friends of the other family members and don't want to fall out with the as a result of this, but on the other hand, not getting the money for xmas when they know im relying on it isn't sitting too well with me either.
Ive had to chase the money from day one.
Best of it is, when i sent an email asking for the money, they were more interested in asking why, after 2 months, they were not showing on first page of google for keywords such as buggy, and pram....
i tried explainin about seo...but i don't think they understand the seo is something totally different from the website design part

It is fully dependent on the contract that was signed and the terms that you placed with it. When I do my web design and seo work, I make a point to let the client know that their terms are what they are. I also ensure that I tell them that if the invoice is late the site is gone until such a time that they pay it. tbh i wish i hadnt offered to do it. I thought the fact that i was saving them thousands would have been an incentive to pay, but obviously not.
Never mix business with pleasure. The person can't think too much of your friendship or the impact it will have on you so rip it down or redirect to an adult site. I do no business with family or friends as it tends to make them former friends as there will always be an issue they want fixing for nothing or conversions rates are low and it is your fault etc, not worth it.

It is time to be a business man w.w., you have to take the site down until they pay you. It is as simple as that. If the fact that they are not paying you is not making you upset, just think about your kids and christmas. Now if that does not upset you enough to do it, imagine them taking food from your kids and them starving, because that is what is happening in a sense.
It is a dog eat dog world. I know that is not fair and people should not be like that, but for the most part that is the way that it is. Also, once you give someone like that an inch they will take a mile.
Your family should come first above all, including your feelings about this. Just block those out.
What you need to do in a civil manner is call them and tell them that you were told you would be paid the full amount when the job was complete, which was 12/14/2010, if I read this thread right. You will give them 24 hours to make the payment and if it is not paid then the site goes down. Stick to your guns.
On an ending note, really thinking about them being family friends. If those are family friends I really hope you have no family enemies.

Personally id log in, install a wordpress maintenance plugin (im using 1 right now), and change any admin passwords.
When the maintenance plugin is activated anyone going to the site will see a nice simple 1 page splash that says its being restructured/down for maintenance (whatever you want to say here) etc. Takes 5 min to set up and very effective.
It might not be making much money, but itll be making none when its like this and will get their attention.
Only change it back when you get the money.

If I get this, This is a families friend friend? I say take that shit down especially since they are giving you problem. Same situation happened to my Brother in law. Had a family friend buy $4000 worth of product and always came up with an excuse. The guy had money too. These types of people are scum. This is how they make their money by fing others over. Don't wait. Take the site down change passwords. Once he paid teh rest, then and only then put the site back. If they act smart, tell them to f-off.
This is good advice. Whenever you offer a super-discounted deal to someone you know as a personal favor, they seem to stop thinking of you as a professional who is in business, but simply as a friend having fun with your hobby.
Even when things do work out, friends will typically feel like they have done you a favor by letting you do the job rather than appreciating the fact that you saved them money and most likely put in more effort than you would have for a 'regular' client.
It helps to have a business name to put things on a more professional level if you do find yourself dealing with people you know. Another solution if a friend pushes hard to have you do something is to tell them that you don't have time but have a 'partner' you work with occasionally that you can recommend and turn the job over to a third party you know. You may still do all the work, but let the partner do the collecting and keep a small commission for being the middleman. That prevents you from being the bad guy if you need to pursue collection or run into issues.
