I moved to California with my family 4 years ago from Canada. I was in high school at the time, and yeah, moving in the middle of high school SUCKED.

I'm almost 20 now, and though I've gotten more used to it, I absolutely hate it here. I mean, I'm not as..happy as I used to be I guess.

I'm in community college now but will be done in 4 months, and am thinking of applying back somewhere in Canada or on the East coast (it's more my fit there).

    What do you guys think?

Have you ever lived somewhere that you were unhappy?

I don't mean to sound like a brat, I'm certainly not. But anyone who has moved in the middle of high school will know what I mean. I feel like I missed out on so much. I had such a large network back where I lived. There was always something to do, I had tons TONS of close friends..but now shit sucks. I just never got used to things here. It's a completely different culture. I lived near Toronto, which is very similar (culture wise) to a lot of the Eastern states... Massachusetts, New York, etc..

PS. For some reason, I was stupid enough to post a similar question over at Yahoo Answers..and yeah, never doing that again. I think 99% of the people there are imbeciles.

I can relate a lot. I moved like 6 to 7 times when I was a kid and I didn't mind it, until I went way into a different region which was a major culture change. Totally changed me, as I tried to adapt. When I was young I felt unhappy.

Later in life I found out, that you will always be the person you ever were. If that makes sense.

Just don't change man. Always be who you really are.

Thanks bro, appreciate it. I know how you feel man, it sucks. Yeah, I'm one of those guys. I'll NEVER change my ways. People here sometimes bug me (friendly bugging of course) cause of my style, music I listen to it, slang I use, etc.. cause a lot of it is from the East coast culture. But I'll NEVER change that.

I just feel like I'm missing out on life. Back where I lived, I'd wake up every morning look forward to it. Here, I really don't have much to look forward too..it's kind of depressing.

I'm debating whether I should take the plunge and apply to universities back on the East coast.

Without a doubt, do it. Especially if it won't have any major consequences in your life. I'm 24 now and also thinking about going back to my old region.

Not trying to be Dr. Phil here, but I don't think you can suppress feelings like that. Like wanting to go back. They will resurface later on in life.

And it's part of the whole IM lifestyle, right? Do whatever you want to do, as long as it feels right and it's smart. Freedom and what not.

wait you actually used yahoo answers for something other than IM? :p Nah but I know what you are feeling, where I am at right now I don't really like it. But I view it as motivation and I don't try to dwell on it too much. I Used to live in Arizona now I'm in Massachusetts.

I like NY a lot but always felt out of place due to the fact that I am not in a rush and at times never felt like I fit in. This of course could be the fact that no matter where I lived I would have felt the same cause I didn't like myself as a person up in till recently (few years). There is an old saying, you can travel anywhere but you take your self with you. Hope you find happiness as maybe there was never any resolution or closure from the time you moved to Cali. I think you should look into that more closely. Happy new year btw.

Beers on me for that; I used to think that was all FB was about too.

Don, you are young and can recover from almost any mistake you make... give it a run as long as you do not alienate family is what I would think makes sense.

My parents got divorced as a kid and I lived with my mom. It was all good in the hood until she re-married and I had to live in HIS house. It sucked. I didn't even feel like I was living in my own house. The house was always a mess and the place was just depressing. I finally made the choice to get out of there. I moved in with my dad that lives far away from my school. I had to get up at 5 in the morning and I wouldn't get home till like 5 or 6. It was harder but at least I was happy.

    My advice:
Make the move. Just do it. If your miserable in your place of living, then your life is miserable. Change that. Take a risk and change your life. No one is going to do it for you.

Yeah, it's certainly a fasted place area, that's for sure. I think you're right. I think I just haven't found closure.

Hahaha, thought I'd put Yahoo Answers to use for purposes other than IM :p

Thanks Greg. I certainly would not alienate my family; I'm actually very very close with them.

PS. My name is Ben btw, not Don. Sorry, my username is confusing haha!

I've been to Los Angeles several times and I feel like it's the most fake place in the world LOL

I've been to Detroit, I loved it! I've heard St Louis is really dangerous though.

    You're right bro..thanks man. :)

Boston isn't really a small town..is it? I mean, what other town are you comparing it too? haha

    lmao

Sorry dude, Yankees fan here :p

I'd be glad to offer him some psychiatric help. I'm a Yankees fan myself haha!

Sorry to hear that buddy. Are you planning on moving?

I'm from St. Louis. Although there are very dangerous neighborhoods downtown, it's not all like that. I like it here, but then again, I've never lived anywhere else.

I'm sure there are places I'd be much happier at, but I would hate to leave all of my friends and family that are here.

OP, why not move back to Toronto and go to school there, get your own apartment and be around friends and family again?
