have file hosting and sharing site, need more traffic - help for a newb, please

recently bought a file hosting and sharing site that gets good traffic now - in the high millions of sessions monthly. am trying to grow the traffic / site but not really sure how to do that as it's basically just grown organically over the years. seems like bhw has a lot of veterans in growing sites like this - any feedback / help? the site is completely free currently and it does not require registration... thanks in advance!

Hi there, I'm not a veteran but my first thought is that if you have some kind of authority and good organic traffic that has grown over years it may be a bad idea to monetize it in a way that make the website less usable.
If you add trouble (registration, surveys, lockers) to get to your downloads, you may loose audience.

One thing you could try for traffic is building a forum with "official" downloads from you and staff and "community" shares so everyone can contribute.
If the forum gets popular, make the registration invite only and ask for donations (with the excuse to pay for hosting and everything).

I'm really just brainstorming with you. I have no evidence that this will work.

I am no veteran/expert on growing a site.
However, I would expect utilizing social networks to be the first option to explore.
At least that's where I am looking for opportunities

I would check out competitors and see how they monetize. Many of those sites use PPI. There are two download buttons, one is fake, one is real...
