SERIOUSLY .. 3 Bedroom, OceanView...2 Bath...22nd Floor Condo in the "Marriot" about ... $1000 - $1,200 monthly..3 Bedroom in Mabolo (Cebu) same deal, non oceanview but private walkaround balcony...$800....If you on a budget you can get a 1 Bed for $500 or so if needed...

FOOD - IS CHEAP...$2 meals, $5 Lobsters..and that is true...but you'll get tired of it fast...Pizza Hut, Coke, Pepsi, Mc Donalds..etc are all not the same...and are nothing compared to back home..a Big Mac has a patty on it as thin as a sheet of paper..

Live in MAID - I was paying $25 a month + $20 a month for her quarters downstairs.

LABOR - CHEAP .. $5 per day, I was paying my people...I met an "big time" ATT exec over there...his take home...was $600 a month :) ...so thats were you are really at an advantage..

BOTTOM LINE - Few months of play, few months of business are cool...but if you are still young, OR have anything of interest going on back at home...you will get tired and not stay long. At one point and time, I was looking at land on the beach..was going to build a house, and blah blah blah...Beachfront and built for less than 300K, not bad at all. But, I couldnt do it...the people and country will drive you crazy..

Good luck, go there...meet some women, make some money...it is an experience..

Some of the places are dirty, but most are clean and undeveloped. Yes, cost of living here is very cheap. We get hit by typhoons often in this times of the season so better stay in high areas away from the shore.
 
Actually philippines is one of the most busiest place or country, because even 12am or 3am you can see lots of people walking around in your neighborhood not like in some countries that you hardly even see anyone walking at midnight. try to come here in Christmas and new year here in philippines so you will know the difference or how special we celebrate those days..cheers..:D
 
if you are in a good pension then $1,000 -$1,500 USD will give you a good stable living in here. to an average westerner the cost of living for a comfortable lifestyle starts at 600-800 and you sure need the air conditioner due to the humid weather.

and if you guys seek to have a wife in these parts, be prepared to shell out a couple of 500 for extended family help


of course living in the main city where internet is B+ only is gonna cost a little bit more compared to living outside in the provinces but the internet there are D- to non existent.

lots of tropical country diseases to be wary of too. like Malaria, Dengue, Chicken Pox and to those promiscuous males, STD's lots of HIV and AIDS. LOL


in all speaking english even to the street cigarette vendor wont be a problem, just stay away from the authorities and corrupt government agencies.

am from Cebu you can ask me anything about Cebu.... and for you to know their a lot of outsourcing here...
 
Obviously the problem for the OP is not UK prices. When you are cheap everything always seem expensive.

but I certainly appreciate the thread and some of the people who have posted their experiences or who actually live there .... in terms of what it is like and cost.

being from USA - NY - we pay 4k in rent / Insurance / $500 Car and expensive food - so probably just like people from UK - you always think of packing it in for a while and moving somewhere else.
 
to give you a rough estimate about the cost and living here.

Exchange rate sampling here:

1 US Dollars = 40 Philippine pesos
1 UK pounds = 70 Philippine pesos

Like charon said above a few post from me, here's some sampling cost


1 pack cigarette [Marlboro] = 1 USD = 40 pesos
1 liter Gin [Gilbeys] = 4 USD = 180 pesos

1 Wholehearted meal = 200 pesos = 4.25 USD you can eat 2X or 3X a day
30 days = 255 USD



Clothing/Jeans/Shirts = 2,000 pesos = 42 USD

Electric bills [aircon and PC] /month = 12,000 pesos = 300 USD

CONDO/small housing unit rent /month = 12,000 pesos = 300 USD

Travel Expenses/fare 3.50 USD = 300 pesos a day if you travel 1-2x a day = $100 a month

When I first return here in my homeland a little bit of culture shock occurred but it took me around 3-4 months to burn my $10,000 debit account from my Dad with all the partying and princess type of lifestyle I did with my then boyfriend[now husband] LOL and that's just for me he has his own wallet.





the only drawback is the crime and the diseases that you will have to deal with daily.

I'm in Thailand now, great place to live, just some bad areas, Philippians is suppose to be very similar to here...

Your price estimation is just bizare, don't know where you got that form, I was in a 3rd world country for 4 months before and those prices still wouldn't cut it.

Jobs are near impossible to get because your foreign, so try make some decent cash online and live off that man :)

OP - I have been to the Philippines on two different occasions. The good things about PI def outweigh the bad. Overall the cost of living is inexpensive, the people are friendly, courteous, hardworking and English is the primary business language.
Most importantly though, any time you have the opportunity to live somewhere else, even for just a few months, do it.
 
If you really wanna feel CHRISTMAS

Then

DECEMBER would be the best month for you to go to the Philippines.

September is the start of Christmas Celebration here in the Philippines. :D
