Hastags: Mixing popular with long tail?

Hi,

I'm new to IG (thanks to everyone sharing their experise, I've learned a lot from going through threads), one thing I'm unclear on, using less popular hashtags, do I mix them with most popular hashtags or only go for less popular long tail hashtags?

e,g #determined 3million
#determinedtobefit 10k

Brand new account just started yesterday, I don't have a chance getting seen for #determined on the explore page, so do I ignore super popular hashtags and only use ones like #determinedtobefit or do I mix up 50/50 popular & not so popular?

Try like this: 80% less popular
20% more popular.
But use hashtags closer together ,something like : 80% under 100k and 20% around 500k.
 
See how many likes the featured posts are getting on the tags - if you get somewhere near those amounts, then use them on your posts. You have a better chance of getting stuck to the top that way. But also include some more popular ones as suggested above. I personally also add like 5 really popular ones so i get a bunch of likes from bots too to push the numbers
