Hashtag popularity by location

Hey guys,

Has anyone tried to scrape/identify popular hashtags by geo-location? I imagine this is incredibly useful for some niche markets where location is essential --- (e.g. near a beach, in a city, etc).

If so, what resources have you found useful and or what ways have you found to get this info? Are there current methods where one can choose a location and find all trending/popular hashtags for that location? I can imagine that by scraping many posts in a location one can start building a frequency list... and figure it out. Has anyone already done this?
