It sucks when you're in the middle of doing something and windows updates, I eventually got rid of it and went to linux mint and then I use windows xp in VirtualBox for just a few programs. The only thing that seems to suck about linux is that its has horrible touchscreen drivers, If I don't disable touchscreen my laptop will have so many ghosts clicks after a while of running that I have to power off and then back on to use it.
Even for IM, you don't even need a native windows machine at home, since you can just rent a dedicated server for that and for most of us you will have a much better internet connection thrown in. For me I could rent 4 awesome dedi's with a total of 4Gbps of bandwidth and still spend less than what I would be paying extra for a 100Mbps line.
