[Guide] How To Win GOOD Clients For Free

Great guide. One thing though: I disagree with your comments on upwork. Sure, it is a grind compared to what it used to be, but you can find some diamonds in the rough. And when you do, they'll pay you time after time after time!

I have a few points that I don't really understand.

1. Are all of the clients approaching you? How is that possible with a new account with 0 connections? That is, the first name is eg. Adwords, and the last name is Pro. So just some random guy that is called Adwords Pro.

2. Do you use InMail? You only get a certain amount each month if you are paying.

3. How do they even find you and trust you? Is your headline something like Adwords Hamburg, so that people can find you?

Other than that, this is gold. Thanks a lot!

Great share.
How do you get clients on LinkedIn?
Do you in box them or they just approach you after seeing your profile?

You have a four options that you should take advantage of:
  1. Hope and pray they find you after you optimize your profile for SEO keywords
  2. Optimize your profile and visit qualified profiles within your target niche and hope they check you out and take action (better optimize your profile for copywriting to take action in addition to the SEO)
  3. Approach your niche with inmail, can be costly and limited so you better approach targeted/qualified profiles
  4. Approach your niche as a connection request, problem with this approach is too many people may hit the "I don't know them" button after denying the request which can slow down or throttle your profile. The trick is to have an apologetic tone within the ending of your request copy so they are less likely to hit the spam or "I don't know them" button e.g. "if this doesn't sound like something you'd be open to at this moment - I apologize for the intrusion." Comes off professional and respectful of their time.

1. That's why it's worth learning how to optimize your LinkedIn profile. Once you've mastered it, you'll see that it can happen on the first day.

2. Nah.

3. About the headline, kinda but not really. Just like with anything else, it's important to be a good salesman to speed up the trust process. I have a portfolio from work I've done previously, so I'm able to pull that out whenever they get suspicious. Just make sure they feel oh-so-special, and that you're totaaaally invested in the future of their business.

Great work! I'll be trying this out myself! Lots of gems in this post.

No, sorry. I stay away from Thot Heaven.

This comment had me on a roll lol, but great post. Wish I would have thought about this years back when I was more serious about freelance web design. May have to study tactics shown in this post and revisit web design along with some other skills I picked up over the years.

Seems like I found Gold. Putting myself together and starting a Journey Now. Will update a thread if I get something. :)

Thanks OP for the wonderful post.

Would also suggest filling your Linkedin connections to 501 people.

It makes your profile look better with social proof. And any number above 500 replaces the number to become 500+

Theres 2 ways to do this. Spend an afternoon or two just adding people.

Or you can pick and choose qualified prospects to add to your connections. If you fill your connections with 500 meaningful and potential leads, somehow a qualified lead will find their way to your profile.

How about promoting your services on LinkedIn or Reddit?

Thanks for sharing this man!

I did the first one (reddit for hire post) and got a couple inquiries. One of them became a client for a xxx fee and % of revshare for sales generated. Will be very lucrative!

I also followed a business on IG that does custom car badges and I reached out to the owner about doing Revshare for bringing in more shares and he is on board as well.

So many ways to get clients just get out there and do it.

The thing is...
Back then when Upwork wasn't "Upwork", it was absolutely possible to make a great income on there.
It was more or less nothing special if a client posted a job and was willing to pay 25K for it, they didn't even care because they knew that excellent quality isn't cheap. But once oDesk and Elance merged (and became what is now known as Upwork) it went downhill.

The people who made bank on oDesk/Elance already established themselves and got to keep their earnings and profiles, which is why you'll see some profiles on Upwork with more than 350K in earnings, but once you take a look at their job history, you'll see that 80% of it was made over 4 years ago and some haven't completed a gig in over 2 years because they either got a normal job or started their own business.

The reality of Upwork right now is that it's being overrun by people from third world countries who go as low as 2$/hour, making it almost impossible for anyone from a first world country to even get to minimum wage per month. Since this has been going on for years, companies became aware of it and actively use Upwork to get work done for as cheap as possible.

Companies who are willing to pay a good wage for freelance work? They go and look somewhere else.

You can literally see this in any industry on Upwork, it's at a point where it's rather upsetting than hilarious. People want an entire ebook with 500 pages written for 12$ (not to mention that Upwork takes 20% of that), 120 pages translated within 3 days for 20$, or even a highly modern web app in React + Django with design and backend development for barely 50$.

If you're planning to starve, then yeah. Upwork is still a great choice.

Your submission is absolutely accurate. I'm from a third world; nonetheless, I can't subject myself to the level of exploitation being melted on sellers on most freelance platforms at the moment, particularly Upwork.

Should we talk about the fee Upwork deducts or the odd system of bidding for jobs (10 connects per month and per job at least 2 connects are deducted )?

I'm in the Motion Graphics niche. Before leaving the platform, I couldn't make myself to believe the level of shitty job adverts being posted on a regular basis.

A client could post that he wants a video that requires the use of 3D and 2D programs for $20.

I used to wonder then if these clients were not aware of the degree of effort it will take to make such videos.

Even if I'm from a third world, it defiles logic and in fact profit wise, taking such an offer to me is an act of stupidity.

And I feel this is not about a third world thing. Majority of sellers who take those jobs end up abandoning them and the clients would probably get angry , leave Upwork and never to come back again.

I feel Upwork holds both the buyers and sellers a duty of care to ensure there's synergy in the relationship of both parties.

Upwork ought to create a standard that won't allow buyers to spam their platform with jobs with unrealistic expectations.

It's a matter of time, any freelance platform that fails to be responsive to the needs of their users ,both sellers and buyers , to make both of them benefit fairly, such a platform will fold up and become history.

I wonder why owners of these platforms are not seeing all of these things, considering that these are platforms making them millions of dollars every week.

That aside, please, who can show me a good way to have pages with value like this saved for future reference?

I have saved several pages on here using watch thread, but when I want to retrieve them later , I won't find them.

Perfect guide, especially for all the people trying out local rank and rent sites in the Journey section.

Upwork is hard to live on, but it can be a goldmine if you find the right nice and optimize your profile correctly.
