[Guide] How to find good expired/dropped domains for your PBN, niche site, mini site, resale, 301, or redirect from expireddomains

I was looking at namecheap auction the other day. They have quite a few domains which are up for sales. I liked a few but I have this question.

Does Namecheap or the likes just sells them after properly checking all the metrics or they just put them on sales and we have to check before buying them (like buying an expired domain)?

What if u decide to buy from the auctioned domains? The ones with bidders already. How do you know the Authenticity of the domain u are bidding?
Or are they all Authentic?

Hi, I didn't even know Namecheap did domain auctions until two days ago when I was searching expireddomains and clicked on the price and was taken to a Namecheap auction, either it's a new service or they haven't advertised it very well.

But I managed to win a webcams (live sex chat/models) domain with over 2k pages indexed in google, I only just added it to GSC, but it's getting CTR of around 9%! - if I just get one guy to sign up and start spending on the models it will be well worth my winning bid of $5 +$13 reg fee!

I very much doubt Namecheap checks the metric of the domains they sell on auction, as I mentioned in the original post, there are literally thousands of domain names dropped every day, it's probably just an automated service for expired domains to try and sell them for more than the reg fee. And as with all types of auctions, it's up to the buyer to do their research before bidding/buying (Think 'Storage Hunters', Car auctions, eBay, property/land auctions).

As I answered shawn_007, I have only just learned about this.

My best advice would be to do all the checks that you would for a dropped/deleted domain.

  • Is it indexed in Google? Do a site:domain.com search to see if there are any pages indexed. And are they related to the domain or has it been spammed with Chinese text/pharmaceuticals/gambling pages? Click on the images tab too for any red flags.
  • Use Semrush and Ahrefs to see the 'Domain Rating' or 'Authority' score, or another SEO tool. If it only has a DR/Authority rating of 0-5 it's probably not worth getting in to a bidding war for, but if it has a score of +50 and ranking for thousands of keywords and no one else is bidding you might be able to get something really valuable.
  • Use Semrush and Ahrefs to look at the backlinks and most importantly the ANCHORS used, and the sites which link to the domain - does it look natural? i.e. a site about 'hair and beauty' would have links from similar hair/beauty/make up/fashion blogs/magazines/news sites and the anchors would be related too.
  • Use Semrush and Ahrefs to look at what keywords the site is ranking for, using the 'hair and beauty' site example again you would expect it to be ranking for related terms.
  • Use the WayBackMachine (https://archive.org/web) to look at snapshots of the site over the past few weeks, months and years to see if it has always been used for the same niche or suddenly something totally different.

Shame, anyone of the hundreds of people here who ask daily for an easy way to make money online could have registered it for $10, got a $1/month hosting plan, put all the original content back on there and had themselves a nice little affiliate site bringing in some regular dollar.

Is there a way to check if an expired domain has been penalized? Like an actual penalty. Or do you have to go by the backlinks?

I followed this guide and can't find good domain.

where to find good cheap expired domains with some DA today?
