[Guide] Dealing with Over Optimization - The Sky Isn't Falling!

Winchester,
Thanks for your in depth reply, much appreciated. I was starting to panic as Google was saying for me to remove my links that counted as spam and it is something I just could not do because they were all built by outsourcers and now they say they dont have any login details to remove them.

Thanks

Glad I could help, let me know if you get it to work! :)

Thought I would take a moment to let people know that the reasons they may have seen some sites slipping the past few days is covered in this thread. This is the link devaluation!

Thanks a lot for the info, really helpful.

Could anyone recommend any SEO services on BHW that apply similar ideas?

I have a fairly new site (under 4 months) which is in quite a small niche, I've invested a lot of time into it. It's a niche I'm passionate about and have done extensive keyword research but only now getting into the link building process. It would be heartbreaking to over SEO it and get penalised by Google so really want a more subtle service, no automated xrumer stuff etc.

I think over-optimization might also be a reason. Focusing more on a specific keyword density and not including LSI keywords and writing content for the user.

Yeah, the so the biggest thing you should concentrate on is anchor text diversification (de-optimization)...what do I mean by de-optimization, use naked urls, like http://mysite.com and random anchors such as "click here" "visit site" etc...

Winchester gives a breakdown of how your anchor text should be broken down in the original post in this thread and its a good breakdown and I see a number of other people who have similar breakdowns to his...

I will go a step further and recommend this:

25% brand name anchor text (if you have one), so if your company was Amazon, you would focus on anchors like "Amazon" "Amazon.com" etc...
25% naked urls, (as described above), and/or random text like "click here" "visit site"
25% exact match anchor text
25% exact match anchor text + other words (for example, "visit Amazon to purchase the latest Harry Potter Book")

Have I proved these percentages are the best? No, this is just my best guess. Winchester's percentages for breakdown of anchor text are very good and I think if you were somewhere between his percentages and the percentages presented above, you should be alright with diversification (de-optimization)...

Wow, thanks for the research!

take it to heart and de-optimize your anchor text...the biggest problem with the BST section is most of the op's don't allow an unlimited number or url's and anchor's and this is the biggest weakness in these services that i see...

i think these op's could offer this, but their services would not be as effective, but in the long run they will be MORE effective b/c de-optimization is key...

Great article, with lots of good feedback. I have a question I was hoping to get some feedback on. We are always talking about Anchor Text, Contextual Back Links, etc., but I haven't heard anyone talk about creating some juice using their pictures (.jpeg,.gif).

Like most, I have original content with .jpg's that have been "Geo Coded" prior to using them in blogs, forums, profiles, etc. that the Big G has indexed. I would like to try and push these up higher in order to create more link diversification, and juice. My question is this:
  1. What is the best tool to accomplish this?
  2. Is this something that's worth doing?
  3. and, What would be the best way to do this?

Thanks, and look forward to the feedback.

Not a problem! It was well deserved! Hope you've made good use of it; and glad you enjoyed the guide!

Another great resource that validates what I've been saying has just been brought to my attention you should check it out if you were hit with Penguin:

http://www.micrositemasters.com/blog/penguin-analysis-seo-isnt-dead-but-you-need-to-act-smarter-and-5-easy-ways-to-do-so/

I was recently asked via messenger if this method applied to the Penguin update and thought I would take a moment to answer it here:

Over-optimization and De-valuation of purchased links were the two main things we saw with both Panda and Penguin updates to the Google algorithm. By maintaining a strong link diversity, including strong contextual links, and having high authority links as was outlined in this over-optimization method one can easily dodge/recover from the Panda/Penguin updates.

The only thing that was changed with this method is that adding in more social bookmarks is a must after Penguin - other than that this guide is still on par and a great starting resource if you are looking to recover from Penguin

Balls to the wall thread. I will begin to incorporate in our campaigns.

If you haven't had this diversity before you may need to play around with some numbers before it works for you, make sure everything is high quality and contextual and you'll do well

+10 rep bro!!! ;)

The only way I can describe what I am feeling is with this image;

great post!

what do you guys think about making multiple rounds through the web 2.0 list?
you think there's be a footprint?
for simplicity's sake lets say i go down a list of web 2.0's and with good high quality articles and different style links. if i use the same username or blog name on all sites you think that would be a factor? as the url's would be the same-ish
then what about if i make multiple rounds through the list and now i have 100 links from different web 2.0's with similar url's and another 100 from the same web 2.0's with similar urls. then another 100 and another depending on how many rounds i go through them.

i hope that was clear. opinions?
