1) Do you think guest posts on authority sites still passes page rank? (With the usual byline backlink)

2) Would you add a link to your self in a guest post article, how risky is that?

1) Yes, it works. 2) As risky as dying from a sneeze - provided the text is 100% original. Am looking for donor sites myself. I am from Russia and actually here in Russia we have some cool resources for such promo-activity for the Russian language, all such resources and donor sites prosper. As to promoting the English part (my site is bilingual - there is almost zero level of service in the West, looks like most Western site owners got scared by the cunning Matt C. or something. Quite a funny situation, in a way, in the sense that the overwhelming majority of Western site owners opt to refuse to take heaps of USD they duly deserve preferring to believe in outright lies and fairy tales for children.

I don't think there is a risk you have to written related to the other sites so you don't need to frighten at all.
Guest posting gives some extra benefits then other supports, because people know about your content and your creativeness .
I don't try it but my best suggestion to you was Guest posting.

But if you are doing in this way the link juice will be less and it may have some risk too.
So,make sure that your site is related to that site are not.

Try to post on a related website in the same niche and use unique content.
 
Sure it does. And most webmasters are okay with you linking to your site as long as you provide value in the article to their visitors (contextual links, not just in the resource box).
 
Guest post on high quality niche relevant site will help boost your rankings, they can also become a natural source of traffic to your website. Definitely go for it.
 
Of course it works. But it should come as part of your bigger strategy. And no problem linking to yourself - the whole point of a guest post is that its one of the most above board, high quality and relevant links you can have so no need to hide behind it.
 
Guest posting still works, but the trick these days is finding a legit non-spammed site to guest post on. Buying a guest post for $10 on an over-spammed site won't see you much gain. So like with much SEO these days its not the tactic, but the execution that needs attention paid to it.

True. My guest post technique is to search for keywords relating to my website that say or look like they may accept guest articles and I e-mail the editor with my topic idea to see if they will accept. Also I look over sites that I prospect with Semrush and Moz stats to weed out any potentially spammy sites.
 
Guest posts still plays an important role in link building. By outreaching the blogs manually relevant to your niche will boost your ranking for sure. Add relevant / informative content to the post which bring you good number of visitors for you site.
