Google announced that starting with August this year they will roll out a massive update that won't use links at all to rank the sites.
It seems they have developed a way to understand the meaning of text and are switching from a text index coupled to a link graph to a semantic index where every information has meaning and connections with other information.
"We will be able to provide our users with real answers to their searches. If a user searches for a more generic term we will offer a graph of suggestions so the user can drill down to the more specific search that he is interested in. For example, if a use searches for the word Google we will provide suggestions for Google as a company, stock info for GOOG, Google technologies and services, news related to Google etc. Also, a user searching for a specific product will receive a summary of information in his language. This information will range from ratings of the product on online retail sites, information regarding quality (compiled from reviews), specifications and a lot of other details specific to that type of product. [...] We expect the accuracy and relevance of the results to reach a record quality - something we have tried to achieve for a long time. Also, spam in our results will be eliminated because we will not offer the usual results but actual information on the search query."
This is going to be a game changer and it seems Google might just take over the internet completely in August.
The text is from a press release and they also expand on this a bit on their blog.
