Google update just now? 10/4?

After reading this thread and seeing confusion, I'll give my two cents, which will hopefully help some people.

1. If your site was hit around October 4th, you were hit by Google's most recent spam filter Penguin 2.1. Google has said this is a revision of 2.0 that "goes deeper". I've found it useful to refer back to Penguin 2.0 analysis that has been performed. Most people that were hit by 2.0, and recovered find themselves being hit again, and some that escaped 2.0 were hit recently. It seems as though Google has tightened the filter to catch more sites; this explains why sites that didn't get hit before 2.0 and had no link building done, got hit by 2.1. This is all speculation, as I don't have a large sample size to test and am trying to infer based on what others have said.

2. For the people concerned about hummingbird, please take the time to read relevant posts on various SEO blogs to understand what the premises and concept behind hummingbird is (there was a great post on GOY referenced earlier in this thread). Google announced that Hummingbird was released in the middle of September. From my reading of everything I can find on Hummingbird algo (including the patent), it will favor more content, and the use of LSI terms. Hummingbird re-writes search engine queries to provide more relevant search results.

3. Finally to all the people saying their "white-hat" sites got hit, you clearly don't understanding the meaning of the term "white-hat", but this is personal opinion. If you got hit, it's almost certainly because you were spamming or had spammed in the past. I'm really starting to think that Google is trying to push SEOers away from anchor text altogether. As google becomes more sophisticated, it will not need anchor text as an indicator about what a particular page is about. Please keep in mind that I'm not saying links are dead, just that anchor text may be going that way.

Question to my fellow BHWers: Did anyone that has only links back to their site with generic anchor (click here), and naked urls (www.domain.com, http://www.domain.com) get hit?

hm, an explanation for highly volatile serps could be machinelearning aswell. If the algo is really new, it gets polished by comparing various serp and the effect it had on the visitor (bounce rate, behaviour etc), iterating towards a better result.

I think the volatile SERPs we're seeing right now are down to Panda having not been updated yet. It's coming, along with a data refresh, and I'm guessing that once that's happened these volatile SERPs will calm down considerably.

My best site had been no1 for a long time and dipped down to position 9 - 10 (around 26th August) and sometimes page 2 a few weeks ago. Made it back onto page 1 though just after.

Now its vanished to the depths. I have found an inner page on page 8 and kept going until I ran out of pages. Google were showing 25. I clicked the option to show the results with omitted pages included and I found a lot of my inner pages containing articles.

I found my home page and my 2 "sales pages" on page 38.

I have no idea of the conclusion. I found around 20 inner pages which werent showing, my about us and contact us page and my email us page all ranking above my home page.

My site has around 10% do follow links. The site in position 1 is a page on webmd.com with 43 nofollow links and and 25,000 do follow and a huge increase in links added in the last few weeks.

Can anyone make sense of the picture?

I'm none to sure of the cause of this but it is exactly what happened to a few sites I owned following the original Penguin. I think it is a some form of link penalty whereby the 'optimal' pages are penalised and instead the lower 'less optimized' pages are the highest ranking on the site for the term. (think about it, hardly any one builds links to contact or about pages so they are to some respects going to ride out any penalties).

The sites that had this penalty I'm afraid to say, have never fully recovered despite hours of implementing new templates, link cleans, new high quality links, social signals, valiatiating html, load time increases etc.... :-/

"white hat" SEOs are just spammers in denial.
 
I would say the smartest thing to do with your money now is to buy Google stocks, because they will make their profits rise like crazy once most people in online business are depending on Google ads to get some traffic.
 
For my sites the current top 10, most of them have 1-0 mentions of the keyword on the page and few back links but very strong domain rank on ahrefs over 90
 
i thought my site has gone. But today i saw that my one keywords rank increased from not top 100 to 59.
Good.
 
FWIW, I haven't seen any changes on 10/4 but I lost about 60% of my traffic on 8/26. It's been slowly crawling back up ever since.
