Although we aren't using SAPE for our clients - we're still doing well even with authority footer links:
Quality content is also important.. you can't just spin using unique article wizard or the article builder, you have to manually pay someone to create a high quality spinnable article
It's essential you use social signals as well
A lot of sites that were hit, were not having their site mentioned on google plus status updates or any social sites at all
These factors are becoming more and more important
I'm taking care of my clients - and building the right kind of links for my clients at the right pace, so they can see favorable results over the next couple months

My rankings were increased after i bought sape service from this site,about 10 days ago and my sites are still going goog and ranking well but accord. to candybar,yes i did concentrate on social signals,so maybe that is why my sites aren't hit unlike the others.

Still ranking well..But I'm Using Some other Diversified Links as well to Mix Them up
If you use all the one link type ie: footer then your a fool and will sooner or later be hit, it does not take a genius to work this out! Some of our clients that did this were slapped today the majority (smart clients) are still holding strong because they diversified their link profiles and anchor texts!
Cutts already made a tweet about this and there has been a thread, I love how everyone jumps on the sape is evil band wagon anytime google rolls somethign out, see here:

Its always better to diversify your links and use some unpopular network.

Why would this come of any surprise? If you put all your eggs in one basket and someone steals that basket then guess what your fucked.
Diversification should be a common standard in business and of course in your SEO methodology.
Almost everything BH/WH/GH comes down to common sense. If it looks like shit, tastes like shit and smells like shit. Then its probably shit!
So if your link profile looks like spam and it looks completely unnatural then be prepared for a slap.

do they compare website traffic to links? like if you have 1000's of back links and not too many visits does that look unnatural?

I have both with and without sape links!
None have been penalized as I use sape links for high competition keywords ALONG with web2.0, social bookmarks, Social networks, forum profiles, relevant blog comment and Private blog.
ITS ALL ABOUT DIVERSIFICATION.
ONLY SAPE LINK may cause problem.

My sites are ranking very good. But i don't use SAPE.
My sites are ranking fine, I used a few SAPE links as well.... diversification is the key.
Build quality links with quality content and proper anchor text variation and of course with some diversification in the link profile... you will be good (I think so)

I think we are at a point where we must think that Google update literally don't exist.
If you build pure black hat sites, they are going to fall some day.
If you build pure white hat site and unless you are a really big authority site, you are going to fall some day.
So, just rank site using various kind of links (Use VARIOUS kind of links. It will surely increase number of days where your site will stay ranked. Also, keep building links consistently. This is what I have experienced recently. Consistent link velocity is important).
Forget there are any updates whatsoever.
If your site falls, try to rank it again.
Or else, start again with new domain.

I agree on you mate, OP to rank your site again, just add more quality articles which are more unique and niche relevant. Also build your site with quality do_follow backlinks which should be permanent link.
