I think Google is doing the right thing, why to send free traffic when these sites are sueing. People you need to understand that google is not a public service.

The Belgian newspapers sued Google for including their listing on their site. From what was writ it did not state that they wanted out of just the News results so Google did the right thing.

I live in Europe and have a very personnal opinion about this kind of thing...
Most countries and companies in Europe hate big corporations. Media included. In my country, a big national search engine / media portal / ISP / media owner (newspapers, magazines, etc) / all around nice guy company (not), make everything possible to ruin their competition.

What they don't realize is that bigG is bigger than some coutries GDP. You can't fight that. They should work with them, not against them.

I still remember when they were talking of spending a few billion euros to create a state-run european seach engine Thankfully for the tax payers, that didn't go forward

While it seems daft in hindsight and i certainly wouldn't have taken Google to court over this as i think it is good Google listing your new in Google news and the search results, a lot of newspapers got upset about this a year or so ago in the UK. Rupert Murdock thought that Google should pay him for listing his newpapers' news and eventually they came to some agreement and it didn't go any further.
