I've been pondering this question and I'm not sure what the correct assumption should be.

On some Google listings it seems that Google has combined Places and Organic listings.

For instance, on some keywords my client's listing is within the Places listings but nowhere to be found in organic listngs. But other site pages and blog posts are ranked.

So the question is, am I wasting time trying to rank the website if it's already on the first page Places listing?

Any feedback on your experiences/expertise is appreciated.

I will tell you a nice trick I use.

Use a different page for the Google Places listing, such as the contact page. This is beneficial because when Google groups your places listing and your organic listing together, then that is only one link in the top 10. If you use a different URL for the places listing, you will show up in the top for Google Places, and your regular homepage will show up organically.

With enough SEO, your site may show up as #1 and #2. #1 being organic, and #2 being Places.

    Good luck!

So it's your impression then that Google Places and the main site *are* under one listing? Also--can I go change the Places URL without losing the listing? It's already ranked top three across multiple keywords and my client will KILL me if it dropped out of those positions.

You wont lose the listing if you change the website to a different page. I had a client who's places page was in the top 3 for a pretty competitive city, and when I changed the website it maintained the same rating and eventually got to #1 from the reviews and citations we got.

Also, geo-tagged video marketing is one of the best ways to rank in Google Places in my opinion.

Video Geo-tagging is all about syndicating videos. If you have like 20 different video testimonials on 20 different video hosts, you can syndicate them by making them all relevant and similar to each other. Similar descriptions, titles, geo-tag locations, etc. That has given me great results with Google Maps.
