I believe to some degree that future is here already. If looking at BHW posts, most of the people will link with just few quality links in the first tier and then cautiously add more on next tiers.
Reason is that huge number of links seems would not give that much benefits these days but can cause negative effect instead if overdone. Diversity of quality links plus social traffic plus click through and bounce rate are factors that in combination impact your site's success.
