Interesting reading,

http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2014/01/24/linkless-seo

I believe to some degree that future is here already. If looking at BHW posts, most of the people will link with just few quality links in the first tier and then cautiously add more on next tiers.
Reason is that huge number of links seems would not give that much benefits these days but can cause negative effect instead if overdone. Diversity of quality links plus social traffic plus click through and bounce rate are factors that in combination impact your site's success.

Interesting read but is based entirely off of the propaganda that is being sent out by Matt Cutts about guest blogging being dead. I find the linkless future concept to be a tad premature. I think Matt Cutts is saying that guest blogging and text anchor linking schemes are dead because he and his crack team have no real way of knowing what is legit and what is not. Therefore, he is trying to encourage people to stop doing it so he and his team have less to fight against.

Yes, could be the case too )

Until they invent real artificial intelligence, have some kind of tracker on every site in the world, or record behavior of people on the web and what sites they visit, for how long and so (maybe chrome can do that?) or hire half of Asia to manually check all websites in the index, they will have to use links as something what tells them about quality of the site. Social media surely changed that to some degree, but I think for many and many years links will be very important part of the game, but yes definetely not that important as they used to be.

I don't believe that BS for one minute. Yeah they're making it harder by closing loopholes, but links will always be a major factor, and as long as they are there will be blackhats gaming the system - simple as that really.

Links are never going away... just bad links are becoming entirely useless instead of mostly useless.

After reading this sentence I quit reading this article

The advice that SEO thought leaders and pundits (including us) typically give to websites and companies trying to get ranked is:

*Create great content that naturally earns link

How will Google determine which links are earned naturally and which one are created by some kind of black hat method? By now Google has proclaimed every link building method as "bad".

So how is the differentiation going to take place LMFAO

-guest posts are bad
-link exchange is bad
-buying links is bad
-links from directories are bad
-forum links are bad
-private networks are bad (should I keep going...)

Hello everyone, I bring you some fresh news, SEO is dead, links don't work anymore, please stop any IM related activity and go to work @ mcdonalds.

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY GOOGLE

There is a simple solution for Google - ignore the anchors, but give weight to "textual" links. Let me explain:

This is spam: http://www.google.com/
This is not: google.com

Should make them competitive for another year or so.

I don't think Cutts is "lying" when he makes bold claims, but he's ahead of Google's capabilities. I think eventually they WILL get to where he is saying they are at now... but I am beginning to think it's more of a foreshadowing of things in two years than an outright lie. Look at old comments he made, they might be a little overstated, but many of them are now essentially true.

So to fully ignore them is foolish.

And every time, we're two steps ahead of him. Especially when he keeps sharing his future plans.

I don't think he's sharing his future plans, more like he's sharing what he wants SEOs to believe. It's funny he says one thing but if you search on his own search engine, the search results tell you otherwise....

My bad, you're right. He keeps sharing his "plans", so we'll know what NOT to do. He's a helpful guy even when he's not trying.

I think the concept of a "linkless" future is a little over stated.

What was said in reality that people are jumping to conclusions?
Wordstream Blog:
"one search engine has already decided that links don?t matter. Russian-based Yandex uses user behavior and engagement instead of links."

Search engine land on Yandex (the article Wordstream linked to):
"Yandex is to cease attributing any ranking factor value to links for commercial queries in its Moscow regional results
...
Speaking to Alexander this morning he explained that this change applies only to commercial queries representing some 10% of the queries Yandex sees
...
Russia this might be [buying windows for houses], the key is to generate a lot of traffic to your site using all of the marketing and normal traffic generating methods open to you ? which of course also includes links from high profile blogs or relevant sites.?"

In other words: links still matter.

How many of you were around before the world wide web? Links mattered then as well because you had to know where to look when there was no search engine.

High power links still crush it, period. Junk links are becoming harder and harder to use, but why bother when you can buy high power links so easily these days?? The fact is outside factors like loading times, time on page, social signals, etc., are ALL easier to manipulate than links. And Cutts JUST said social signals are not part of their algorithm. This whole link-less future stuff is BS.

The day Google abandons links and can determine "quality" without them means that they have created Artificial Intelligence capable of mimicking humans.

When this day comes, I assure you where your "penis pills" site is in the "SERPS" will be the least of your concerns, as Skynet will have gone live and the human race will be at war with the machines.

May I humbly suggest you follow my lead and invest a good bulk of your Adsense + Clickbank earnings into stockpiles of weapons, ammunition, non-perishable food, gallons of water, and a good underground infrastructure for you and your loved ones.

The time has come to prepare for this war, ignore my warning at your own peril...

Link always count as long as it produce value. Google cannot leave them to zero.
